Destructable DVDs on the way

I guess the idea is that they can sell them really cheap, but then are unplayable after 48 of being opened.  This way, it will generate buzz about the movie, but still preserve regular DVD sales as well.

Sounds like an interesting idea.  I'm sure, however, piracy will still ensue even if they DVDs are unplayable shortly after opening.  They will just have to be ripped quicker.

The question that comes to my mind is the amount of landfill space these things will take up if they become popular.

I understand that they are made out of recyclable plastic, but I also read that they have to be processed in a special way. So you couldn't just drop them off in your curb side recycle bin.

Anyway, I suspect our friends in Chemical Engineering will find a way to defeat the chemical that darkens the disc beyond readablitity. They will package it in spray bottles and sell over the internet.

That's true.

I remember when these were first mentioned awhile ago, they were already talking about hacks.  keeping it in an airtight container, chemically defeating the decomposition, etc.

It's a reoccuring theme that no matter what is done to stop the piracy of music, movies, etc, that what it really does is draw attention to it, and curb it at most.
