From the CS department's home page (http://www.cs.siue.edu/cswebsite/):

"January 06, 2003 - The MSDNAA (Microsoft Developer Network Academic Alliance) Program is now available online. Eligible faculty and students can now download available software and resources offered by ELMS.  Students must contact their CS instructors in order to obtain an account, prior to using the system."

You can probably just email Greg Bartholomew and he'll set things up for you.

To get a copy of VS.NET you must ask you Computer Science Instructor.  The system is automated and allows them to give software to students of their classes using e-mail.  After your instructor enters you e-mail address into the MSDNAA Site you will receive and e-mail with download instructions for the software.  If you do not have a high speed connection at home, you can use the computer CS16 in the computer science tutor lab (EB1036) to download the software and burn it to a blank CD.  In this case you must bring your own black CD.

The Computer Science Dept’s MSDNAA subscription provides access to both Visual Studio 6 and Visual Studio.NET 2003, our MSDN subscription CDs and some other MS development software.  Additionally, Windows XP Professional is provided to students, who do not have a new enough OS to run .NET.  This, however, is the extent of our license.  We get copies of Office and other MS products to be used in out labs through the university’s  MSDNAA subscription, but these products are not available to students for free.

If you are interested in a cost effective solution for word processing or other computer tasks on your home computer I suggest you have a look at the SIUE Book Store.  The Book Store has special academic rates for MS software that are significantly lower than regular software prices.

I also encourage CS students to try open-source solutions because they tend to be freely distributed and can be both powerful and educational at the same time.
