Title: What did you think about 2006 Candidate #1?
Post by: R. Andrew Lamonica on 2006-02-03T09:26:57-06:00 (Friday)
Yesterday (Feb. 2nd), 2006 Candidate #1 was the first of the three  CS faculty candidates (http://www.cs.siue.edu/news/story.aspx?StoryID=200602010) to interview this month.  I did not get a chance to see his presentation on [Topic Removed], and so I am interested in what those who did think about it.

Would like to take classes with 2006 Candidate #1?  Why or why not?

For those that were at the interview it would not be appropriate for them to discuss it with others that were not.

I think it's perfectly acceptable to spread the word.  I wouldn't mind knowing either and I done graduated from SIUE already.  There are those that may have been at the interview who's word I would trust more than a professor or someone elses.  Like many of my friends that graduated with me.  If Tyler (tfizzle) went to a faculty interview and came to me and said "in no way should that man be allowed within 50 feet of students"  then I would join the march to keep him from being chosen.  But if he came along and said "he was awesome, knows his stuff, and can relate to students."  I'd be much more inclined to welcome him as a teacher.

What exactly is your reasoning for keeping it all secretive?

I thought it was a rather interesting presentation.  I liked the fact that I could actually understand what he was talking about and relate it to what I've learned already in Computer Science.  The fact that I could understand the explanation of his algorithm and I'm only a freshman was pretty good on Dr. Bouvier's part.

I am sorry for the confusion.  I did not intend for students to post what was said in the â€Ã...“faculty-freeâ€Ã, second part of the interview.  I just meant the presentation.

Did you like 2006 Candidate #1's teaching style? Was his presentation understandable? Did he seem interested in his the topic he was teaching? Did he seem prepared for the talk? Would you take a class with him as teacher?

These sorts of things should not violate an confidences.  If you do not want to express you opinion here then that is fine.

Thanks for that vote of confidence Bryan (ModernDayDarwin).  By the way I got your email the other day.

In terms of new faculty members, I can only speak from personal experience about one of the candidates.  I had Dr. Abrahamiam for 2 classes (CS 340 and the HCI class--crap I've forgotten course numbers and I graduated less than a year ago).  I feel I learned a great deal in his classes and I enjoyed being there.  There are few instructors in the CS dept that I would take any class with no matter what it is.  Among them are Dr. Weinberg and Dr. Abrahamiam.

I guess I'm biased, but that why it's my opinion.

I was there for the presentation and the talk afterwards for about 30 minutes. I have no problem talking about what I saw or my opinions of the presenter. I understand that some people who might have been interested in attending my not have been able for various reasons so I hope they take my opinion to thought if asked about the presenter. That being said:

I thought the talk was extremely interesting and easy to follow thanks to Dr. Bouvier style of presenting. He was able to take some very difficult and complex ideas and explain on a level that anyone could understand, as in the case of Shaun. He met questions professionally and didn't miss a beat when it came to answering them. If he made a mistake, or didn't know something that was asked of him he admitted it completely which is a wonderful quality to see in a possible professor.

In my long talk with him afterwards he was very interested in hearing what I had to say about his presentation and any questions I had for him. Dr. Bouvier is really interested in teaching the courses that involve Software Engineering, Senior Project, and ones that deal with his research. He has had experience at five other universities teaching this stuff. The other interest he has which impressed me was his interest in helping student organization. This kind of help would help CAOS and any other student organization like it greatly. The only thing I can complain about is his use of a Mac. But hey no one can be perfect. So in short I give Dr. Bouvier a :

I feel the same way Brad does about the presentation.  He did an incredible job of bringing a complex topic to a level that almost anyone could understand.  Given his background, I think he'd do a great job teaching Interaction Programming (CS275), HCI (CS321), or possibly even Computer Graphics (CS482).  I, personally, would sign up for a class if I knew he was teaching it.

Don't let Micro$oft know.  They might strip you of your title and sacrifice your first born child.  ;-)

On a side note I am looking forward to the other presentations to see how the other possible professors do.

And then maybe we should have a poll to see whom we found best!

ah its been a while, but i just saw this.

in my experience job interviews are private. and should only be discussed between the interviewers.

its a different story if the interview had an open invite to all students to watch/participate etc.

The interview was an "open-invite."  Any student or faculty member could come and from the comments in this post, I gather that several did.

Not many students were at the second candidate's talk but that is understandable because he has presented and taught at SIUE before so people already know him.

A very large number of students showed up for our third candidate's talk.  However, one of our professors asked that we not post the names of the candidates, so I did not put up a comments post.   I felt that it would be hard to keep her name from being mentioned because it was posted around campus and is a matter of public record.

Why should the candidates names not be posted? In case their current employers find out they are looking for jobs elsewhere??  I'm pretty sure since SIUE is a state school, the candidates names are already out there, and probably easily found - especially if the school/state paid for their travel to the interview....

Schreib because a job interview is a private matter.

scenario: If I were the Dean of Engineering and you interviewed for a job as an instructor in Engineering. I really didn't like you.  Do you want me posting all over internet forums and telling everyone I know that I didn't like you and that I'm not going to hire you?

That's pretty damaging to your reputation and it's crossing the line of libel and slander because that can effect your chances of getting future jobs.  Because our Engineering department is close to companies like Boeing in the area that we get a lot of professors from.  Also we have a good relationship with other universities.  So that could hurt you when you apply for future jobs.  Hence the reason for keeping things fairly quiet.  Now with open interviews it's meant for the faculty to get feedback from students on future professors.  That still doesn't give us the right to openly post etc about applicants.

Telling the whole world you dislike someone is not libel or slander.

I believe that our hiring practices at SIUE are open and so there is typically no secrecy about the candidates.  I am not sure why the teacher wanted the names removed.  He did not explain and everyone else I talked to seemed to think that posting the names was not a problem.  However, the teacher was quite â€Ã...“passionateâ€Ã, (his word) about the removal of the names and I don’t care one way or the other so I took them down.

I think that hiring practices at public universities are quite different from those of private companies.  For example, some companies require that you sign a non-disclosure agreement before your interview so that their interview practices and any other information you learn during the process does not reach competitors.  I have never heard of a school doing this.  I have also never heard of a private company making part of the interview open to the public.  However, the CS Dept. has each prospective teacher present their research to anyone who wants to attend (usually only students, faculty, and staff).  I have been to half a dozen of these presentations and have never been asked to keep their contents secret.  These differences in interview techniques probably reflect a deeper difference in philosophy between academia and commercial industry, but that is probably another five pages of tying so I’ll just skip the speculative analysis.

Anyway, at this point this thread has changed from a discussion of 2006 Candidate #1 to a discussion of the CS Dept’s. hiring/privacy practices.  It might be best to start a new thread if this is what you guys want to talk about.  I am concerned that the teacher who is â€Ã...“passionateâ€Ã, about the names of the candidates might ask me to sanitize this thread.  Since I have no desire to do that, it might be best for this thread to leave the main page where it is less visible.

Good enough.  PatelA, if these were such "private" interviews, students wouldn't be invited to participate and share their opinions with the University either, and the interviews would be in front of a closed panel...  I was just curious why, if the candidates names were already all over campus for the student discussions, they couldn't be posted on CAOS's forums.
