Title: Sound Problem on fedora core 3 system
Post by: vaddis on 2006-02-09T10:03:25-06:00 (Thursday)
Hello,
I am new to Linux. Recently I installed Fedora core 3 on my desktop which also has MicrosoftXP professional on it. Every thing is working fine except that I dont hear sound. sound card is detected  though. I will be really thankful if any one out there suggests some thing that fixes this problem.

My initial response would be, why Fedora Core 3?  Fedore Core 4 has been out for quite a while and would likely remedy any bugs that might exist in the sound subsystem of a previous version.

I'm using Fedora Core 4 and the Alsa sound driver and everything worked swimingly with the stock kernel.  Mind this is no a pretty non-standard box too.

Either grab new ISOs or update using Yum.

I'm not around my Linux system right now, but you should check the permissions of /dev/dsp and /dev/mixer.  I'm going to bet they only let you use them if you're in the audio group.  If that's the case, make sure you're in the audio group and log back into your system.  Your sound should then work fine.
