Title: Busy, Busy, Busy...
Post by: Peter Motyka on 2002-09-28T22:51:31-05:00 (Saturday)
Wow, the forums have been dead this weekend, so I thought I would post this message.  What is everyone so busy doing :) ?  I always find it interesting to hear about everyone elseââ,¬â,,¢s projects and such.  Tell us what you are up to, perhaps it will start up some new conversation?!?  Anyway, I am going to get back to my senior project work.  Feel free to check out my group's progress, rafs.cs.siue.edu (http://rafs.cs.siue.edu/)

I could not find a better place to post this... but I found it amusing enough to squeeze it in here.

Here is what happens when you unleash students on a UNIX system to do a program with fork and exec...

Note the load average:

root@solar:~# uptime
 10:57pm  up 244 day(s), 12:59,  5 users,  load average: 43.39, 43.29, 43.21

PID USERNAME THR PRI NICE  SIZE   RES STATE    TIME    CPU COMMAND
 17870 fengy      1  23    0 1568K 1256K run     19:59  5.68% consumer
 17869 fengy      1  33    0 1568K 1256K cpu/2   19:42  5.57% consumer
 17868 fengy      1  32    0 1568K 1256K run     19:35  5.56% consumer
 18073 fengy      1  32    0 1568K 1208K run     18:14  5.54% consumer
 18076 fengy      1  23    0 1568K 1256K run     18:34  5.54% consumer
 17876 fengy      1  52    0 1568K 1256K run     19:08  5.52% consumer
 18075 fengy      1  23    0 1568K 1256K run     17:36  5.47% consumer
 17875 fengy      1  32    0 1568K 1256K run     19:49  5.41% consumer
 18078 fengy      1  33    0 1568K 1256K run     17:37  5.38% consumer
 18077 fengy      1  32    0 1568K 1256K run     17:54  5.37% consumer
 17873 fengy      1  33    0 1568K 1256K run     19:22  5.36% consumer
 17879 fengy      1  23    0 1568K 1208K run     18:47  5.33% consumer
 18087 fengy      1  32    0 1568K 1208K run     17:41  5.32% consumer
 18074 fengy      1  33    0 1568K 1256K run     18:21  5.27% consumer
 18079 fengy      1  33    0 1568K 1256K run     17:57  5.16% consumer

Perhaps I should have edited the name of the user out... But I thought public embarrasment for not cleaning up after themselves was appropriate. Actually, I was too lazy...

Don't worry. I don't even know who that is. I wouldn't even know him if he ran into me in the hallway knocking me down.

Here's some of the latest stuff:

Journal paper with Dr. M. Stephen and Kristin Caufield on "Teaching Participatory Design in HCI" to the Journal of Computer Science Education

Conference paper with Erin Ecker on the "Effects of Social Facilitation and Electronic Monitoring on Usability" to the annual ACM conference on HCI.

Summer Research Fellowship proposal on "The Effects of Robot Competitions on Student's Attitudes toward Science, Math, Engineering, and Technology" to SIUE Grad School.

Oh, and then there are the usual things of such as teaching, graduate program director stuff, advising, fixing robots (which is almost done), helping IME 106 robot competition, working on research and graduate projects, senior projects.

Well, there is more, but no time to post it.  :-o

What's been keeping me busy this weekend?

Senior Project! (I'm sure that's nobody else's reason)

Working for the family business.  (My dad's crew has gone from 5 this summer to just himself right now, so he needed some help)

Working on the family farm.  (We finished harvesting our conventional soybeans this weekend)

Did I mention Senior Project?

I installed RedHat Linux 7.3 (succesfully) on my desktop, and 6.1 (with display problems) on my laptop.

I heard RedHat 8.0 is going to be out soon, perhaps that would help your display problems.

The release date is in the next few days... But I am not sure when the ISO will be available.
