The Smackbook Pro (http://blog.medallia.com/2006/05/smacbook_pro.html)

This is really neat, but I dont think its something I'd want to be doing a lot.

What do you CHI people think about this?

This may be good for hunt-n-peck typist. But for those of us who learned keyboarding skills it requires you to move your hands off of the so-called home keys, thus reducing productivity. I think the novel fun factor would wear off quickly with the aggrevation of taking your hand out of placement frequently.

Now if you could design a foot peddle, possibly some sort of blue tooth device, that you could tap your toe or heel on and it would switch between desk tops or screens - that would be cool. Hmmm - maybe a good CS/ECE senior project: design, develop, usability test, and apply for a patent.

haha. that glorious!

but i do agree with DrW on the waste of time trying to find that damn "J" key over and over (JTall, dont forget a/b our multi-million dollar invention we developed in 275).

p.s. ill take on that senior project.

most forums organize themself in a frequency down order. The most frequent post is at the top.  When you want something to get more attention at the top, you "bump" it to the top.

I actually have this working on my Macbook (or Smackbook) it's pretty cool. Although it's not as sensitive as I'd like, I feel I'm "smacking" too hard... Anyway I just have to play with some code to turn it up, I think. Otherwise it's pretty sweet to check out.

So this is something that Apple did intentionally?
Wow..  Or is there a flaw in the mighty Mac?

There are sensors on the Macbook for when if it gets dropped etc, it shuts down.  Someone reprogrammed them to switch between desktops.  I wouldn't call it a flaw or anything.

From the article:
QuoteTurns out, the laptop has a built-in motion sensor. Nominally, it's there to protect the internal hard drive. The basic idea is this: If the accelerometer suddenly notices that the gravitational pull of earth is no longer present, the most likely explanation is that the laptop, sensor and all, is currently accelerating at 9.81 m/sÂÃ,² towards said earth. In that case, it will (wisely) try to turn the hard drive off in preparation for impact.

I can't wait till I get my new thinkpad, they have acceleromiters in them too.  They use it to turn off the hd if your laptop falls thus cause less damage to the drive (though if theres enough gforces its not gonna matter, however if your running linux you can access the acceleromiter as easy as you can with the mac.  just a file in the /proc you can read and use that data to maniuplate linux.  I'll be look'n forward to that.

"BUMP" is an acronym for Bring Up My Post, and at the same time it does actually bump your post to the top :P
