Title: I want to run a CAOS event and I need your help.
Post by: R. Andrew Lamonica on 2006-08-01T11:00:53-05:00 (Tuesday)
CAOSters,
I would like to run a beginning of the semester CAOS event to welcome new Tech. students and to help new CS students get setup with their e-ID’s and MSDNAA software.

I will need help in the following ways.

Personnel: (these jobs can overlap)
1. I will need volunteers to help students get their laptops (and maybe desktops) setup.  I will provide training and will be around to handle questions.
2. [d]I would like at least one CAOS officer there to make the event CAOS-sponsored and to tell people about CAOS.[/d] (Thanks Shaun Martin)
3. I will need at least one student living in the dorms to help spread the word with new students.  I don’t think they have a Technology FIC (Focused Interest Community) any more, but there is an Engineering FIC that should contain some students taking CS classes.
4. Someone to take photos of the event.
5. [d](optional) I would be great if an OIT student worker could be there to advise students on obtaining an e-ID.[/d] (Thanks Brian Lotz)

Supplies:
1. Some of the students will have an easier time working with burned CD’s than they will using 7-Zip or an ISO mounting program.  So if anyone has blank CD-R’s they can donate to CAOS or if CAOS wants to spring for some that would be helpful.
2. [d]If the Microsoft student Ambassador wants to buy Pizza and/or be there then he can count this as one of his events.[/d] :-(
3. We should have â€Ã...“Joining CAOSâ€Ã, information available.

Logistics:
1. We need to select a date and time that will be appropriate.  Anything after the second week is pointless because everyone who needs the MSDNAA will probably already have figured it out or given up by then.
2. We will need to check out a room or find a location.  I think that a lab might be better than a classroom because we will need electricity and network access.  Also, if a student wants to bring his/her tower we will have access to keyboard’s, monitors, and mice.

Thanks for your help,
Andrew Lamonica

Andrew,

I recently left OIT for an internship at Anheuser Busch,  but I know the e-id system forwards and backwards.  I was there for two years and the senior student tech for one. I also still have contacts in OIT if anything has changed or to get ahold of the "E-ID" brocure they hand out.  I would be more than happy to help if I can attend, even though I no longer work for them.

Scott

Thanks for the offer, Scott.  The e-ID system has gotten more complicated from an administration point-of-view now that it is using Active Directory and so we will probably need someone who has up-to-the-minute information.

Fortunately, I talked to Brian Lotz (OIT Customer Support Manager (http://www.siue.edu/OIT/CSC/)) and he graciously volunteered to make an appearance or send someone in his stead.  He will be able to answer any procedural questions that new students should have.

I'm living in Woodland Hall next year so I should be able to spread the word or put out flyers.  Also, I can attend the event whatever day it will be held so there's one CAOS officer that will be there for sure.  I'm not sure about the others.

Yes,

I am aware of the changes since the integration of the Active Directory System, but if Lotz will be there he will be able to represent much better than I would.

If CAOS needs some donations I could probably arrange something being a distinguished alum and all.

Thanks for your help,

Sadly SIUE no longer has a MSA. We just do not make their requirements any longer

Bummer.  Which requirement do we no longer meet?

from what I was told it was mainly size and location. pretty much they wanted only the "big" schools to have access to the program. Which in my opinion is pretty crappy.

On a somewhat related note, I've been in touch with the college recruiting groups here at MS.

I can't make any promises, but I might be able to come to SIUE as a recruiter this fall. Perhaps if that goes well they might establish a stronger relationship with the school.

Also, Microsoft does have a really interesting internship program. I'll try to remember to post some information on it here later.

Hmmm, I wonder what their size categories are - we aren't U. of Minn big (40,000), but we aren't consider small either.

We currently have 13,000+ students.

Did you get to keep your XBOX 360 Mr. X-MSA?

Yeah have had that for awhile now. Really smooth and fun system. The Xbox live that they have for it is awesome. From an HCI stand point the menu system and the live interface if very well built. The great thing about this current version of Xbox live over the previous is that it is so upgradable.

Already they have added features that have really made it a robust system and design.

And Dr. W I really think it is more of a PR thing than anything. Cause they pulled the support from Bradley as well. They want to be associated with the big dogs, but that is just my guess. It could of been a funding issue, the year I was in it there were alot of SA doing alot of things. I am sure it cost MS a butt load of cash.

One would think they could afford it.  They're not exactly broke.

well, i was told from the woman that was going to interview me (for M$ SA), they were overhauling the program.  instead of prizes (x-box 360s, ...), they are going to give salaries.  because of the overhaul, they wanted a smaller school list to try it out.  she said to look for siue being added again sometime soon.

...having been told this the DAY BEFORE THE INTERVIEW...i was a bit annoyed.

as far as the meeting is concerned, i definitely am supportive.

we should have an officer's meeting towards the beginning of the first week of class and get this CAOS kickoff/walkthrough event organized and scheduled for late in the first week or early in the second week (mon/tues).
how does this sound?

[
officers and andrew, we will try and schedule the
officers meeting via email. ill send one out today.

I'd like to help with #1, if you can teach me everything involved in setting up a laptop. If it's just getting e-Id and installing MSDNAA software, I can probably do it.
