Title: Visual Studio Installfest on Thursday
Post by: Jeff Croxell on 2007-01-26T16:08:40-06:00 (Friday)
On Thursday we will be hosting Installfest once again to aid students installing Visual Studio 2005 for their Computer Science classes.  Many students have trouble with downloading and installing ISO files they recieve through our MSDNAA subscription.  We are looking for CAOS volunteers to help with this event, and they will be rewarded with free pizza!  Please post here if you are available to help.  Thank you!!

Event Details
Where: EB1036
When: Thursday Feb. 1st from 10:00am to 1:30pm
Who Will Be There: Knowledgeable CAOS Members and Jeff Croxell of the CS Department

What students will need before you arrive
1. You must be enrolled in a CS course, but you do not need to be a CS major.

2. An e-ID that will allow you to login to this site (http://software.cs.siue.edu/msdnaa). If your e-ID does not work then try changing your password.

3. A computer. Feel free to bring your computer. If you bring a regular PC, then we will provide the mouse, keyboard, and monitor. If you are bringing a laptop, however, please bring an Ethernet cable. The wireless is not as fast. If you don't want to bring a computer, we can still answer your questions.

4. Please be sure all Window's updates are installed.

I can be there from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM.  Other than myself, is there anything I need to bring with me?

Soon after, we can have a KDE install fest and install kdevelop. ;-D

Open source!

Might even install faster ;-)

That would be cool!  :-D  We'll have to make that an event, but do you think we'd have enough interest?

Not that I do much programming anymore, but KDE is my desktop manager. What benefits would Kdevelop have for c/c++ over using a text editor?

Pretty much none.

Some people might like class views or something, but I haven't seen any code that just determining the design pattern can't help you quickly identify.

Might suggest you check kdevelop's site, but yes you can have it auto create classes for you, write class members, easy debugging, formatting code, code completion (my fav), a ton of others that are very useful over say a txt editor.  I do love using Vi codeing sometimes, but if only it code comopleted for me.  There's probably a way, I just havn't spent the time.

No one really uses Vi for coding these days, but they do use Vim.  In Vim 7 you can do code folding and regex completion.  I have heard you can do class member completion as well, but I haven't used that yet.  I think it might be distracting.

I can work it from 11:30 to around 1.  I have class at one so I just need to head out a little early to make it to class.

There is one update, Office XP Service Pack 3, my computer is unable to download because I do not have my Microsoft Office Proffessional cd set at school.  If this is not seriously detrimental, I will gladly bring my computer.
Let me know if this will be an issue.

Morgan

You don't need your cd to update anymore, there's an option to update w/o it, its just a larger download.

Yes, thank you to everyone who showed up to help.  I was really impressed with the dedication and support from all you CAOS volunteers.  This makes me really excited about some of the upcoming events; cause you know they wouldn't be any fun without all of you!

Dude, you just need some Google calendar love :)  You can set it up to text message your phone with regards to reminders.  I have found it pretty invaluable.
