Title: Weekly CAOS Shenanigans & Monkeyshines [THIS FRIDAY, MARCH 2ND, 1:00 in the EB Atrium]
Post by: Kit on 2007-02-21T21:01:19-06:00 (Wednesday)
 I know everyone is pretty busy and all, but I was wondering if it would be possible to set up some sort of weekly activity that would possibly create a lot more unity among CS students. I realize that CS students aren't renowned for their socialization skills, but possible we could come up with something everyone would enjoy (even if it was to just hang out and play video games).

Taking into account everyones busy schedule, it probably would  be easier to increase CAOS participation (during the ACTUAL meetings) with the general population if there was a routine weekly time that people could make it to. Plus, it would let newcomers get a chance to mingle with the upperclassmen and perhaps provide a more laid back opportunity to meet your fellow LCD-tanned :pc: classmates.

Let me know what you guys think.

P.s. Some ideas I had:
Mario Kart DS (DUH!)
Mini-code competition
Starcraft!?
Movie (Matrix on the projector?)

Are you prepared to cry when you play Starcraft against me?

Just kidding.  I used to be really good back in HS, but that was 7 years ago!  I bet I could get my random-race skills up to speed pretty quickly though :-)

That sounds like a good idea.  We could have a weekly movie or lan night.  I'd love to revisit some classics like "hackers" or starcraft.

Make sure not to tell the MPAA if you play a movie.  A lot of groups can't play them at events because of copyright and "public viewing" laws.

Well then showing a movie would probably be out, but I would definitely be down for some LAN party action every week.

I really liked the idea for the gigantic all day LAN party that CAOS is planning, but maybe we could someone put a couple games (Starcraft!) on there that would be available every week on the computers. That way it would be easy to get a group together to play.

Would this be possible?

How many people do you guys think you could convince to come each week?

I like the idea in general, but I won't play, sorry. Maybe those who are interested in ACM competition can meet at the same time/place and practice working in teams. All we need is one computer per team.

I would definitely be up for some LANs.  I used to play starcraft back in the day but it has been a couple years.

We would probably need people to bring their own copies of the game since there are copyright issues that we have to deal with etc. but overall it sounds like it would be fun.

I think that sounds like a good idea.

I don't know about you guys, but I would be willing to shell out 20 bucks for a game for something like this, if I didn't already have it. Even if we only do it once, I'm sure it would be a great time, and fun isn't cheap.

My suggestion for something like this would be to play Command & Conquer. It makes for a great LAN game, and you can get different variations of it for pretty cheap. Also, most of the Command and Conquer games come with 2 disks, so we would only have to buy half as many copies if everyone had a friend to share the expense with.

Anyway, I would definitely be down for something like this.

Lets get to it!

I was under the assumption that we would bring in our own computers for this.  Most of us have laptops and if need be we could simply bring our towers or an external hard drive and use the monitors, keyboard, mice in the lab.  Therefore we wouldnt need to worry about licensing since its our own computers.  That being said, I also wouldnt mind spending a little money to buy a game that everyone wants.  Lets post some games on here and decide on a couple for the first event.  It could always change later.

Suggestions so far:
1)starcraft
2)command and conquer
3)Warcraft3 dota allstars maps

OMG C&C???!?!?? :-o  We definitely have to do it now. I think the next step would be to figure out times that work for everyone. Personally, my Friday's are pretty open (anytime after 12:00). Let me know what sounds good to you guys.

1. Command and Conquer (Red Alert or Red Alert 2)
2. Starcraft
3. Age of Empires
4. Counter-Strike 1.6
5. An RPG like Dungeon Siege (1 or 2)

I am also free on friday after 12:20.

I'm a girl and so most of the games you guys are talking about are way out in left field for me.  I also realize I am part of the extremely small minority of females in CAOS, but with that being said so you boys do what you want. However, if you guys ever do have a Mario Kart night, I'm there.

I'm going back to South Elgin for Spring Break so I'm not free this Friday, but any other Friday is good for me.

Ok so maybe the Friday after Spring break would be a better time for everyone.

@morgan: Mario Kart DS or N64?

This Friday is probably fine by me.  I don't think I'll be doing anything until later in the evening.

There is no need to focus an evening around me, but any mario kart would be fine.  I only excel at the snes version but I don't foresee that being an option...  So you guys will have some easy wins under your belt.

Where do you guys want to get together tomorrow? Obviously we need somewhere with a lot of ethernet/power plug-ins. :)

Since I am done at 12:00 I was thinking about heading over there right after I eat lunch. 12:30 or 1:00 ish. Sound good?

Sounds good, but I only have StarCraft and Brood War but would like to play.  What about meeting in the atrium and deciding where to move it then?

I'll also bring my DS.

OK! I'll bring Starcraft, Dungeon Siege, and my DS. So to summarize:

1:00 on Friday, March 2nd in the Atrium of the EB

Bring your computer and games.

Side question:
Is it possible to use the CS lab to install/play games?

QuoteIs it possible to use the CS lab to install/play games?

I don't think so.  Jeff Croxell would have to ghost the lab before and after we wanted to that.  Also, we would need valid licenses for each game per installation...  Sorry to bring bad news...

Seeing how CAOS doesn't have a "Meet and Greet" event this friday, is anyone up for doing this again?  I have learned that Starcraft can be played on windows, mac, and linux or unix(if you're willing to do some configuration).  This should allow for a broad group of laptop users.  Any thoughts?

I'm totally down.  :-P

I might have something to do in the very early afternoon, but after that I'm game.

Let's make a new thread for this Friday?

Technically, according to the Fair UseDoctrine, as long as you're not charging for admission, or using it to gather people for a money making activity, it's perfectly fine.
basically, if what you said was true, renting a movie with friends would be illegal...

Sorry for the necromancy.

My school's Computer club hosts video nights, game nights, and other various things all the time for events. We did an activity last week called Get Your Officespace on.. the IT dept donated some old broke machines, and we used them for fundraising. Bought a baseball bat, and we were good to go!

One Bat + 10 computers + 5 printers + a video camera = Fun For All! We also have a huge LAN party each semester. Usually get about 150 students, and raise about $400 for the club :) Free admission though, as always :D
