Title: CAOS Activities and Events Ideas : WHAT DO YOU WANT!!!
Post by: raptor on 2008-09-03T14:39:58-05:00 (Wednesday)
Hello All:

Welcome/Welcome back for another year of school and more CAOS events.  The other officers and I are currently working on putting together our schedule for the year. September already looks to be jam packed with activities.

Further more we want to know what you want to do.  Below I've listed out our current set of activities as well as a few ideas I have had.  Please let me know what you think and give me any suggestions.

Currently Planned:

Dr. White's Famous SIGRAPH presentation - Every year Dr. White returns from his trip to SIGRAPH and brings back amazing videos, new information on the graphics community, and everyone's favorite: FREE STUFF.

Dr. Bouvier's Language of the Month Presentation - Every month Dr. Bouvier will be giving a presentation about a new programming language.  This is a great way to get language exposure from a knowledged and experience professional.  First up: JAVA

Industry Meet and Greet: Approx. once a month we will try to bring in local companies to sit down and talk about what exactly they do, what they are looking for, and some times even begin networking with possible students who may become future employees or interns.  Companies have included: Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Anheuser-Busch, and Jaros.

Ideas:

LAN Parties : We've tried this in the past, sometimes they work, sometimes they don't

Movie Nights : I'm currently working on this.  We may have possible legal issues with Kimmel.  :censored:

Linux Project : Over the summer I ran across a timeline of every major Linux distro ever. I thought it would be neat (as a pet project) to try and install some version of every major distro on a machine.  Potential here for some online exposure for the CS Department as well as CAOS.  Also a great way to get familiar with linux.

Install Fest
: This is usually reserved for installing Visual Studio. Over time this has become simpler and simpler and we end up with one or two people attending.  Maybe we could use this as an opportunity to help students dual boot machines with Linux. (cough cough * Ubuntu :whistling:).  Or some other piece of software or hardware people are having trouble with.  We just need enough people to make it worth our while.

Please provide feedback.  We would also like to know what times work for you.

Thanks,
Scott

Skip installing every major distro; they're pretty much all the same.  Instead, maybe you guys could pool money to purchase a really nice microcontroller dev board (perhaps an ARM-based system), get an EE or two to help with building circuits, and build something impressive.  Maybe an ME would help if you want to do something crazy with the mechanics.

I really like the idea of community based linux projects although I'm not especially keen on the idea of installing all the linux distro on a machine on thought i had was creating an SIUE linux distro/liveCD.

Lan parties sound like fun but it would depend on what game(s) were being played.  Personally I'm a Counter-Strike: Source player and thats about as far as i go with PC games.

The install fest actually sounds like a great time to me but i don't know how many people feel the same way.  If you are in a windows based environment it is pretty much good house keeping to reinstall every 6-12 months.  If not there are always new and exciting distros to be tried.

i gotta say that i think the lotm talks sound pretty freaking cool. i hope to be able to make it to one of those talks if i am back in illinois.

with all this talk about google chrome and v8, maybe you should cover javascript? it is a MUCH better language than people give it credit for, and is starting to make things like flash obsolete.

I have been doing a lot of work with webservices and would love to do a presentation on how to create a webservice using Java and Unix.  Pretty kewl concept.

Also, I have been doing a lot of work with Dojo, which is an AJAX javascript toolkit.  You can do a lot of cool stuff with it.  Also, I am no expert with javascript, but I can layout the basics, i.e. what makes it different than other languages, and how it executes etc.

Let me know,

Tony

Tony,

I'd love to sit down sometime and see what you have.  When/Where are you typically available.

I would love to be able to attend these functions.  It would be amazing if they were geared more towards the evening.

A presentation for beginner linux users would be nice.  I would love to ditch Windows Vista on my laptop and make the move to linux but I really don't want to have to deal with the horror of reinstalling windows if I screw something up.

Besides that, the LotM idea sounds incredible and I'm going to try to make it to all of these meetings that don't conflict with my class schedule.

Any other interest for a general Linux Presentation?

The linux presentation and installfest(for Ubuntu) sound cool.  I use Ubuntu, but haven't done much more than install a few games and some eclipse plugins, so I'd like to understand it a bit better.

Also the javascript interests me.  I'm happy with Flash, but an improvement is welcome. :)

The linux presentation should be cool, I've been using it for about 9 months or so now and I'm still learning new stuff every day.
