Title: Language Of The Month
Post by: Travis W on 2009-02-17T12:53:30-06:00 (Tuesday)
Alright folks we are wanting to get a LOTM installment set up for the week before spring break.
We would like to get some suggestions for the first language and who would present it.
C# came up in the officer's meeting as a possibility for the first installment and there was someone who was willing to present it.
Problem is no one can remember who that person is :bored:.
So if that person would still like to present C# or you know who that person is please get in contact with me or one of the other officers.
We do have someone willing to do a python presentation but won't be able to do the presentation until April.
I will  keep you all posted on this as i get more information.
If you have any questions or comments post them here or you can email me at twisnas at g mail dot com.

Thanks,
Travis

I would love to have C# before summer because I may be getting an internship that uses it. ^_^; Sounds awesome!

I was the one who volunteered to do it. If the C# presentation is going to be before spring break, however, I would like to have a copy of one of the PowerPoint presentations for one of the other LotM, or a copy of one of the recordings from a LotM to use as a general template for the C# presentation.

WTF?  asap?  I have been asking for that material to either be posted on here, a link to it, or given to me for almost a year now lol.  I don't know how many ended up happening, and I think I knew most of them, but it would still be nice to see.

Sorry Tony i was not aware of this. But i promise you that as soon as i get the videos and presentations for Dr. Bouvier i will get them to Mark to be put up. The presentations that took place last semester were Java, Processing, and Ruby. I have been put in charge of this project so if anyone has any questions, suggestions or complaints you know who to come too.

if this is tony as in Tony that took 330 with me, then why did you never ask me for any of this?

Also, Dr Bouvier never had his website up and running for showing the presentations. I have video of my presentation on youtube, but it really needs to be puton a website with powerpoint slides put side by side with it (we had the video show on just Adam Coffman and i while we were talking so we could have people look at slides at the same time)

Yeah I am that Tony lol.  I knew you guys did that presentation, but I didn't know it was part of this.  Anyways, I made like 5 post on here last semester asking if anyone could post them on here, give a link to them, or give them to me directly and nobody ever answered, so I gave up.  I think that was before your Ruby presentation though.

Anyways, if anyone would like to send them to me, shoot me a private message on here and I will give you my email, so (depending on the size) you can send them to me.

We're most likely not going to send out any videos, but we will put them up on the site as soon as Dr. Bouvier hands them over to Travis who in turn will hand them over to me. I promise!! :)

I am in Bouvier's office every day he has office hours bugging him about this so i should hopefully have them soon.
He is busy this semester so it is understandable if it takes him a little bit to get them to me.
I am actuallly waiting to see him right now so i will bring it up again  :D

**UPDATE**
I have gotten in contact with Michael and it looks like we are going to schedule the first LOTM presentation (C#) the first Thursday after springbreak (3-19-09).
We know for sure that it will be after 2 o'clock.
I just need to figure out what the best time is so that the maximum amount of people are able to come.
As soon as we figure out at time i will post it.

There are issues with the videos at this moment.
It is one on the many things i have on the list of things to discuss at Mondays meeting.
When we figure out what we are doing you will be updated.

I don't get why this takes so long.  Someone obviously has the right to upload new stuff for this site.  Just host the video on the Caos server and make a link to it.  Shouldn't take more than 20 mins.  Shoot, email them to me and I will host them and give everyone a link lol.

HAHAHA i wish it was that easy. If you want to know the reason why we don't have them here it is. Bouvier has them and i have asked him numerous times for them.
I even walked into his office with an 8gb flash drive and my laptop so i can get them from him.
He has yet to give to me. He is busy and i understand that.
I am not blaming him for anything. He told me it would take some time for him to get them to me.
So if you would please be patience i would appreciate it. I don't see the need to pester him everyday for these.
Like i said in my previous post it is something that is going to be discussed in the next meeting.
I assure you i am try to get these videos for you. Just be patient.

Well, that wasn't directed towards you or anything.  I have been trying to get someone to post these since last semester when the first one took place.  Whatever, I know most of the material already, but you never know what new thing you might learn.  Not that big of a deal, I just don't understand.  The government is faster than this lol.

Tony,

We are also working on putting together something more than just a link to the videos.  Currently in development is a LoTM site, as well as possibly a few others ;).  We want to make sure this is done right.

Scott

P.S. We are now the new CAOS government, and we are working fast, but remember we are only three weeks in to our administration.

Scott, that is why I said this was not directed at anyone.  I have been asking for this since last semester.  Never mind, not that big of a deal.  A lotm site would be kewl, but a link to the videos could be given in the mean time.  Not sure why this has to be a big process.  You guys are students and busy.  This isn't something you are getting graded on lol.  Not sure why so much effort is being put into "doing it right", but if you guys are having fun then so be it.

However, there has only been like 3 of these and although everyone has tons of ideas, it doesn't seem like you guys will actually have one every month.  A dedicated site might be a bit of work that goes to waste imho.

I would also like to thank Michael Calvin for putting on the presentation, great job! Thanks to everyone who came out for it also. If you're not busy this saturday and feel like playing some Quake, come by the EB between 9AM - 2PM. Last year it was a lot of fun.

Also, the entire presentation captured on video was 10.1 GB, haha. Give me some time to compress it and hopefully within two weeks we'll have the LOTM site up with the videos and slides.  :)

Very good presentation.  I was quite surprised.  Although, unfortunately I went home over the weekend and spent countless hours learning C# rather than working on the ton of programming assignments that I should have been doing.

If the Python LotM is set in stone, there should totally be a new topic for that. =P But unfortunately, I can't make that one because of a class at the same time...which sucks, because XKCD mentions Python so much that I'm really interested to see what the language is like.  I guess there's always the upcoming webpage/videos, right? :-D

Not sure if you saw Mark's post but this is what he had to say about the videos.
Perhaps my use of the word "soon" gave some people false expectations.
I am not the one posting the videos.
If you have any time line question i suggest you direct your questions to the webmaster (Mark).
He will be able to give you more accurate answers than i can.

Alright, I just don't get why you can't just host the video on the server and provide a link to it on the home page.  I do this type of stuff all the time at work, it shouldn't take more than a few minutes.  But whatever, I am not that worried about it anymore.  I know you guys are busy with school so don't worry about my rants. =)

Tony (and everyone else interested): There is going to be a HUGE update to caos that will provide a better way to manage and host these videos. It's not a matter of how to do it, we're all just really busy--but I'm 99.9% sure it will be rolled out this week. Let's cross our fingers.
