It's not suprising.

If this is newsworthy at all, and I would argue that it's not, it is because this 'feat' was achieved with unguided evolutionary programming. The robotics itself is quite unsophisticated, and so one might wonder: why even perform this experiment with actual robotics when one could have more quickly and cheaply did the same experiment through simulation?
