Title: What happened to Minor?
Post by: Aaron Drake on 2003-07-12T14:27:06-05:00 (Saturday)
I'm having trouble accessing my Z drive from home.  I had previously added ftp://drakea@minor.cs.siue.edu to My Network Places.  I had Windows remember my password, and I have not changed it since last semester.  So what gives?  Has something about Minor changed? Is there something I'm doing wrong?  Any ideas why I'm no longer able to access my Z drive?  Thanks for your help.

A work order was put in place to get rid of client150-???.cs host names, and some of the names were messed up in the process.

Just let Greg Bartholomew know about the name problem so he becomes aware of it and can get it corrected.

I've notified Greg.  Thanks, Mike.

This seems to be a real problem.  OIT takes about a month to update host names and they give no warning when they are about to do it.  I almost had a heart attack when the robot host names finally changed.   The change happened 26days after I put in the second request and I had about given up on them ever doing it when one day all my robots were missing from the network. ;-)

The most recent problem seems to be that Greg asked OIT to make the primary names of our servers their real names (eg. Tacti.cs, Anti.cs, Roboti.cs) instead of the client123.cs names we were given without warning a year back.  Unfortunately, in changing these names OIT decided to remove all the aliases for these computer names.  So server aliases (CNAME’s) like pro.cs are gone and the real names (nis.cs in this case) must be used.  I suspect that any correction will take another month to complete, so you might want to just ask Greg for the real name and use it. :-(

Just to let everyone know, Greg told me you can
now access your Z drive from the link at http://engineer.siue.edu or directly at
ftp://home.cs.siue.edu/.

Man, they're even worse than when I make a communication error!

OIT obviously doesn't think about how a change could affect their users or just doesn't read an email that says "change only the primary names".  What in there would make you think it says "change primary names and remove all the CNAMEs for fun?"  Perhaps some better English classes are in order.

tofu.cs???  Who came up with that one?

Wait, let me guess: Peter Motykowski?  (That sounds like something only he could come up with. :-D)

Got it right on the first guess.  :-P

academi.cs anti.cs basi.cs ethi.cs graphi.cs harmoni.cs heuristi.cs mania.cs mysti.cs tacti.cs and roboti.cs

Were my idea.  ;-)

The music themed names, I believe were Dr. Waxman’s idea and pre-date all the others.

With the power vested in me by the ancient order of Philosphy Doctoral, I hereby dub this naming convention "lamoni.cs"

The names listed are not all in use.  Some of them are used for strange tasks like providing websites from your home/public_html directories.  Some of them are for testing things and some actually have servers on them.  I admit that alcoholi.cs was on the list of names I generated, but it did not make the cut.  ;-)

Tsk, tsk, tsk.  What a shame.  Just out of curiosity, how did you go about generating this list?  Did you somehow create a program to search through words in a dictionary database, or did you just think of those names off the top of your head?

(Knowing you, Andrew, I wouldn't be surprised if you did create some program to generate those names. :-P)

Just kidding.

How about schoolsu.cs?  I think that's the mirror site to worksu.cs

I did create a program and used the Linux words list.  I have looked around for the program and the list it created, but it seems to be missing.  I don't remember it being worth note, however.
