Title: Movie Night!!
Post by: John Paul on 2004-02-13T12:28:06-06:00 (Friday)
Movie night is being hosted on every alternate Friday by CAOS. Look in the Announcements section for time and venue. If you have preferences for a particular movie, go ahead and brag about it to win more votes for it. A movie receives a point for each comment posted. A movie that gets the maximum reviews during two weeks will be screened on the following Friday.

Thanks
John

Equilibrium is a great movie for CAOS members.  It's basically the book 1984 made into a great flick.  I have a copy of it that can be played if you guys want to watch it.  I'm reading 1984 right now and it does seem to parallel the book pretty well except for a few instances.  That movie gets my vote.

Equillibrium is a phenominal movie, however I disagree it is more similar to the book Brave New World by Huxley.

I often describe it as "Brave New World meets the Matrix" its very well done

What about an MST3K movie? I don't actually own any, but I seem to recall seeing them for rent (also I expect at least one person in CAOS should have one).

Hmm, we'll I'm just going to have to read that book later and see if I agree.  I'm having trouble finding time to finish 1984 so it may be a while before I can agree/disaree ith you.  :)

the shortened version of the cliff notes for brave new world is:

1. Utopian society where everyone is on the drug soma to control their emotions and everyone is happy
2. everyone is engineered and sex really has no meaning. (ala the matrix)
3. There is a group outside of this utopian society considered "savages" the book leads you to beleive that are much akin to indians.
4. A woman from the uotpia is lost in the savage world. She gets over her addiction to soma, has a child (John) and lives happily with the "savages"
5. One day she returns to the Utopia with John, she gets back on Soma overdoes and dies.
6. John gets a little cranky chaos ensues.
7. "Oh brave new world that has such people" is said and the rest is history.

See what I mean? VERY akin to equillibrium.

Well, I didnt read your synopsis because I'll actually read the book and see if I agree.  You talked me into it.  :)

I can't stand to hear the ending to something prior to reading it (I'm seriously maimed people for revealing endings of movies to me), so I'll come back to this topic after I'm done and let you know if I agree or not.  :)

I have read â€Ã...“Brave New Worldâ€Ã, and seen Equilibrium and although Equilibrium does borrow some ideas from it also borrows ideas from many other distopian society themed books and movies.  Here are some highlights.

Equilibrium gets...
...its style and cinematography from The Matrix.
...its use of mind controlling drugs from Brave New World
...its art and expression censorship themes from Fahrenheit 451.
...its â€Ã...“big brotherâ€Ã, figurehead image from 1984.
...its â€Ã...“the enforcer becomes the rebelâ€Ã, theme from Fahrenheit 451.
...its one man against society theme from all of the above.
...its cityscapes from Metropolis (the movie).

It may seem that this makes the movie worthless to see if you have read any or all of these books.  However, I suggest that the movie makes a few interesting additions to the genre that are worth a look.

1. In the book 1984 the society is controlled in order to fund and continue endless wars while in Equilibrium the motives of society are to preserve peace and prevent conflict at any time.  This makes it a cautionary tail of a slightly different type.

2. The ending of Equilibrium differs from all of the books above (I will not explain how because people might want to see it.)

3. The idea of emotionless killers dressed like and referred to as clergy members is an interesting symbol, although I have not figured out exactly what it means.

Most of all, I would recommend seeing this movie because of the action and style.  Despite its low budget (compared to most action movies) it pulls off an excellent stylized appearance while maintaining a good mix of action verses dialog.

KISS  :)

And yeah, it looks like my reading list just got a little longer.  Now I have to add Fahrenheit 451 to the list, then go to Slackers and see if I can get the old 1966 movie just to add to the experience.

Also, IMDB seems to show that Fahrenheit 451 is going to get remade sometime in the future (http://imdb.com/title/tt0360556/).  It estimated the release date as being sometime in 2005.  Neat.

We showed up, sat down, and I went and poked around with the computer up front.  We had a total of about seven people, but no movie.  We watched the video of that guy beating Super Mario Brothers 3 in eleven minutes (http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/video/smb3.php); and than I tried (unsuccessfully--no codec) to play a movie of off my fileserver back in my room.

I left shortly thereafter.

Next movie night, I will be armed with my DVD of "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes," and if we once again have no movie, we shall watch it. :)

But no movie.
