Title: Gmail
Post by: Michael Kennedy on 2004-06-22T05:26:58-05:00 (Tuesday)
I have two extra Gmail invitations this time around if anyone is interested.  The only catch is that you MUST promise to give at least one of your invitations back out on this board with the stipulation that THEY also give one out on this board, etc.

First two replies here get them.  Then PM me your email address and I'll get them sent to you.  I'll post back up here when I have more.

There ya go.  I think I actually sent you two invitations with my itchy mouse finger.  If you have two just post the invitation link up here for the second one and then it'll go to whomever gets it first.  :)

Enjoy and remember to post at least one invitation here for another CAOS member.

I'd like one.  One gig of spam might be fun :)

I think my email address is in my profile, but I'll PM it to you anyhow.

I have had my Gmail account for a few weeks and have not received any spam yet.  This Guy (http://www.webpronews.com/insiderreports/searchinsider/wpn-49-20040514GmailSpamTest.html), however, has.  Fortunately, he is a special case.  A special nut case, that is.

Sorry I missed your reply until now.  Still need it?  I have one left and if you don't need it I have another CAOS'er it'll go to.  If you do need it he'll get the next one I get.

Not in a rush as long as someone passes me one :) If they want to offer it up to me when they get theirs it'd be fine!

I have an invite to give out to one lucky person. If you want it, post here with an email address or email your address to me at bsauerw@siue.edu. How long will it be until they take away my SIUE email? Hmm.

Thus discharges my obligation to give out an invite on this board.

Upon consideration, it probably wouldn't be a bad idea for me to move on from my hotmail account...

Would someone send me an invite also?

I will. I want to get rid of my invite.

Er, what's your email address?

There, it should show up in my profile now. Hadn't realized that I never checked the "allow others to see my email" option.

I'm surprised that the interest for the Gmail accounts isnt higher on this board.  With sites like gmailswap.com and the like I thought people would be diving at the chance to get an account.

Are there just not a lot of people checking the site this summer or what?

I have interest in an account, but you already knew that. This site always has a slump in users when there is no school going on.

Check the account you asked me to send you one at- I sent you an invitation a little while ago.  It didnt occur ro me until just now that I never got the confirmation saying that you accepted.  Got a spam filter running on that account?

I had to use the webmail interface to see all the bulk mail. I registered now :D. Thanks.

My existing email account has turned G-mail. If anyone is interested in having G-mail without all this fuzzy "Invitation-only" tags, you can have one at "rediffmail.com" and free of cost. Your G-mail invitation is not any previllege bestowed upon you. It is just an ad campaign. You can take this as multiple invitations.

Wonder where they got that idea? It is tempting to be able to email in "11 Indian languages," but I think I'll pass.

I dunno, there's a certain amount of trust that must go into selecting an email provider if you want to have the account for a while.  Gmail seems to have the staying power and I'm not as confident with rediffmail.net.  I'd be afraid that if the ads shrink away off the main page they'll close accounts.

Also, I dont really think that the invitation si marketing.  It seems to me like a smart way to roll out a beta product.  I expect to see more companies do the same in the future.  Google has very good control over the # of accounts this way.

How do you invite people to have a gmail account?

At some point you'll get a red "You have X invitations" or something at the top of the screen when viewing your mail.  Once that appears it'll link you to a popup that lets you fill out some info.

It's weird that you havent had any invites yet.  on my 2 accounts I've had 12 total.

I've also yet to receive any invites through my account. I've heard rumors elsewhere that the beta group is full. Nothing with any claims to veracity though...

I have received quite a few invites on my account, but the people I gave accounts to have had mixed amounts.  We guessed that it had to do with your usage patterns.  If you do not send and receive messages from your account or add people to your contact list then Google may assume that an invite would be wasted on you. ;-)

How many messages had you received when it gave you an invite? It still isn't giving me any, and I'm using it pretty heavily.

Also, the box it gives you is 1 GB.
