Title: Prove your Geekworthiness: Keyboard Shortcuts
Post by: Elizabeth Weber on 2002-09-16T21:58:21-05:00 (Monday)
There are the keyboard shortcuts we all know:
ctrl+c = copy
ctrl+v = paste
ctrl+x = cut

But did you know?
windows(win)+d = show desktop (toggles)
alt+tab = cycles between windows

What cool shortcuts do you know? ...

One I use a bunch is CTRL+ESC which brings up the Start Menu.  Useful for non-Windows key keyboards.

WindowsKey + Pause brings up "System Properties" which is useful when setting up a system.

Alt+Tab is the best combo that not everyone knows about, IMHO.

I'll post more when I use them.  I can't tell you what shortcuts I use, but since I rarely use the mouse, I know a ton of them  :)

alt+tab is nice, but in Win XP you cam make it nicer. There is a PowerToy called "ALT+Tab Replacement". What is does is show a picture of the currently selected app in the alt+tab list, so if you have several instances of the same app going, you can see the contents of the app. You can DL it HERE (http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Install/2/WXP/EN-US/TaskswitchPowertoySetup.exe).

Now Mike, that's dangerous to give people a bunch of shortcuts and not explain them.
You just want us to try them and cross our fingers?
alt+f4 (close window) could do a lot of damage if you didn't know what you were doing...

The windows key is the most annoying key on the keyboard, IMHO.  Granted, it does have some advantages (win-pause is a nice one someone mentioned), but have you ever accidentally struck it during a game?

(My keyboard is eight years old.  It doesn't have such silly keys)

Of course, in Mozilla, I find myself using
ctrl-t (new tab)
ctrl-n (new window)
ctrl-f (find on page)
ctrl-esc (I don't have a win-key, remenber?)
esc (cancel)
ctrl-alt-del (hey, it's still Windows)
And that little button on the front of my computer labelled RESET.  It's not on the keyboard, but it's still indespensible.

P. S.  Walk by BHS 393 some time, and listen to me type.  If I have my door closed, you'll probably still hear it.  Go IBM Model M.

I've never actually used the Pause key for anything ...

It's really handy when you're trying to read your BIOS startup screen--just hit PAUSE and it will stay there until you hit the spacebar.  It's a legacy key--it really has little use today.  Some games still use it to pause, but it's usually easier just to hit ESC and dump to the menu.

Ah, sorry, I didn't think about the repercussions of that.  I'll explain my post again here on what they mean; plus, I've got some more.  That was my fault for not thinking it through of what ALT + F4 could do (CTRL + C is more dangerous in console though).

shift + alt + tab (cycle program list backwards)
alt + f4 (destroy parent window)
ctrl + f4 (destroy child window)
f1 (help)
f11 (internet explorer: enlarge/restore screen)
alt + enter (win media player: enlarge/restore screen)
ctrl + tab (shift through child windows forwards)
shift + ctrl + tab (shift through child windows backwards)
ctrl + end (move to end of document)
ctrl + shift + end (highlight to end of document)
ctrl + home (move to top of document)
ctrl + shift + home (highlight to top of document)
ctrl + a (select all text in window)
ctrl + shift + pageup (highlight to top of visible page)
ctrl + pageup (move to top of visible page)
ctrl + pagedown (move to bottom of visible page)
ctrl + shift + pagedown (highlight to bottom of visible page)
ctrl + c (cut in GUI, SIGINT in console)
ctrl + z (unix: sorta like interrupt process, but i can't remember the technical term for it; win: end of file)
ctrl + d (unix: like the DEL key, also is the end of file key)

New key additions I remembered that I use:
Prt Scr (copy screen to clipboard)
Win + E (start windows explorer)
Win + F (find files/folders)
Win + M (minimize windows, like Win + D, but w/o restore functionality .. from win95/NT4 era)
ctrl + p (print)
ctrl + z (windows: "backspace" key)
Win + R (run program)
Right Shift five times (start sticky keys)

Note: Most of these are from Windows; listing the Unix versions would be too much work.  Ha ha, I'm lazy now!  Also, I didn't want to repeat keys other people had already submitted; so, you find keys that other people used in this post.

I to have one of these wonderful keyboards.  My friend bought a lot of them off of ebay when a place was clearing out old computer parts.  It is the perfect keyboard.

No windows keys
No media keys
A fullsize tab/backspace key.
fullsize shift keys
"\" is in the "correct" place

I learned to type on one of these keyboards and am always thrown off by newer boards that reduce the size of shifts/tabs/"\" keys to accomadate new keys.

Long live 101key keyboards! :D

Nice to see someone else that respects a good keyboard.  I know my roommate doesn't like it!

Would that model M keyboard be shipped with an IBM 286?  We have one at home that feels like it has springs from a car suspension under each key and makes a hell of a racket when typing.

Clink clink clink clink

It should have shipped with hearing protection.

Maybe if the keys clinked different notes, I would switch keyboards, throw away my speakers, and sell my soundcard.

More than likely.  Those keyboards were shipped with the IBM AT, and the same technology (called "buckling-spring") was used on the XT, PC, and the Selectric typewriter.

Mine is from 1994, it's eight years old, and still works like new.

And these keyboards in the EB (where I am right now) are worththless.  No noise, mushy keys, tiny Backspace, \ is in the wrong spot, and the Enter key is way too big.  I want my Model M back.

I can do better than that. I have a Model T keyboard. You need to Crank it to get it to work. You can only do about one key press every five seconds with it, so it can keep up. It also breaks down a lot, too.

Hey! On Windows, that is the only shortcut you need to know :-P

Aye.

BTW, my keyboard is completely normal other than the addition of the Windows key; it IS useful in Windows though.

However, in Unix that key can be a pain.

It's also a pain during Counter-Strike (oops, pressed the Windows key); hey, %*#$ POS!  Now I have to probbaly quit CS and rejoin b/c the game is probably &*$#ed up!!
