Title: Qwute of the Day
Post by: Sheila Shahpari on 2005-07-27T21:23:05-05:00 (Wednesday)
"You have little brother?"
Yes.

"What his name?"
Ethan.

"No, that to hard.  You have other brother?"
Yeah, I have one named Justin.

"That even harder.  What about Bill?  You have brother named Bill?"
No..

"Just say yes."
Ok..

"You call Bill in your home, that's 'lifetime'.  You have another one outside your home, don't call him Bill.  Call him Jason."

Ok, I'm utterly confused on this one.

Is this some sort of analogy for scope?  Bill is a local variable and Justin is a global?

If I remember correctly, we were talking about variable bindings for the external scope of a function versus local scope.  So the analogy would make sense if it weren't for the naming the other Bill Jason.

But really, who knows??

OK,

Enough of these qwutes.  I mean they even lack basic grammar for crying out loud.  It sounds like a cave man wrote these.

I agree with you, Raptor.  These "qwutes" do suck, and I've been thinking that ever since they were introduced.

I don't think I've had so much as a girly giggle, but maybe that's just me.

Maybe it's my extreme dislike for Dr. Wu, or my hatred for the way tenure is handled (in general), or perhaps it's just the fact that I'm one f'ed up individual, but MORE QWUTES!!!!

Well I'll tell you what Grubau.  Maybe you and SlartyBartfast can just have a little pow wow together, you can sit around drink some root beer and entertain each other.  How nice. But PLEASE don't make the rest of us SUFFER.

Lol,
Scott

I agree.  The Qwutes are really not that funny and seem a little mean-spirited.  Perhaps we can find some Tech. jokes that appeal to a larger audience (not just people who have taken one class).

I'll start. (http://caos.siue.edu/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=976&forum=10)

Scott, have you ever Met SlartyBartfast (or as we call her in the real world, Sheila)?  She's one hot lady and I'll sit round and drink with her anytime she wants the company....as long as she's not my acting project manager..then things get tense  :-P

I'm up for more Qwutes.  I know there are some better ones out there than these, but when we had a CAOS thread on this a couple of years ago it got removed due to a hillarious quote relating C++ to a co-ed dorm.

I tell ya, Dr. Wu's class would be great if you could sit in the back and drink a couple of beers.

"If you have two dollar, drink beer.  If you have two more dollar, drink another beer.  So long as you have two dollar, you drink beer." :pint: (explaining a for-loop to engineers)

they're not all knee-slappers, and they're not for everbody.  if you don't like them, how about not reading topics with "qwute" in the title?  i can't believe you guys actually find this worth complaining about...

i usually get a chuckle or a snicker from them, keep 'em coming.  though, maybe you could number the topics or put them all in one big long topic?  several topics with the same name is a bit confusing...

I find qwutes amusing in a sort of masochistic way. Of course my relationship to the CS Department and the faculty is different than yours.

I have no problem with the thread as long as it does not get degenerate to name calling or in ModernDarwin's case to asking other CAOS posters out on a date. ;-)

But the funniest thing I've seen so far is this:

Personally, I think the "qwutes" are great.  Not necessarily because they make me laugh, but because I find it interesting that I actually have to go back and read the "qwute" multiple times to even begin to understand what it's even referring to... and that I believe is the point!  The fact that the "qwutes" are phrases that have actually been said is enough for me to crack a grin, and it's a great way for those that have actually had to bear with these "qwutes" in an actual class to somewhat vent.  In short, if you don't like the topic, then don't read it, or better yet, post a new topic that interests you more! ;-)  I say keep 'em comin'! :-)

Man Bryan, first my girlfriend's sister, now Sheila... :-P

**poke** :-D

Whoaa...what's this craziness??  I had no idea Qwutes would be such a scandal!  I meant no harm with them, I just thought of them as a bonding between fellow studens who had witnessed them.  While most of them might not be that funny, I thought it was more fun to try and figure out what he was trying to say.

I guess we could take a poll on who wants the Qwutes to continue.

Until then, no Qwute for you!

Alright, I've been gone all weekend.  Coming back, it's disheartening to see sexism getting on our boards too.

If we could keep the boards tasteful, that would be best.  After all, these forums do represent the SIUE community.

Congratulations Mike you picked one of the few topics that's likely to make me type for a very long time.  If you are referring to any of my comments as sexist then by all means please explain how.  Last time I checked complimenting someone, and then teasing them in return does not count as sexist.  Last time I checked being sexist was discrimination of someone based on gender.  What you also probably do not know is that I asked Sheila on AIM if she was upset with any of the comments and wanted to know if I should erase them.  I find your comment funny coming from someone that doesn't like going to the art building because "those people scare me"

The_Pot: HEY KETTLE, YOU'RE BLACK!

As for Greg's post, by all means forward them to Dr. Wu's email address.  Maybe then he'll know what his students really think of him.  That he's old, senile, and needs to retire so he can stop wasting students time and money.q

That comment couldn't be taken any other way...  If it wasn't "sexist", then it was certainly distasteful.  I really don't care if you think it was okay; I'm asking you not to do it.

And so what if I don't like going to the art building?  You don't hear me talking about it, and it's really none of your business what I think or don't think.  Also, for your information, I dated a girl who was very into art for 2.5 years, if it matters, and my current girlfriend is in what you could consider an artistic major.

Let's just stop talking about this.  If you don't consider it sexist, fine, but I consider it distasteful.  It serves no constructive purpose to the forums.

I agree arguing serves no constructive purpose.  So you continue making your posts, Slarty can contiue writing the Qwute's, and I'll continue pissing people off.

god bless freedom of speech.

Let me be a little more clear...

DON'T try to piss people off, or I'll just have you banned.  This server is not protected by the freedom of speech.  It is moderated by SIUE, and you are free not to use it, in exactly the same way SIUE is free to not host it.  If you think you are free to say what you want on 3rd party physical devices that you do not own, then you need to have a long long talk to moderators of IRC, slashdot, usenet, and countless others.

Don't abuse your privileges or other people.  This rule goes for anyone using the server.

Thanks, and have a good day!

There used to be a bunch of articles on this very topic, freedom of speech in online forums.  Wonder if I can dig those up or if anything eas ever legistlated.  At any rate I'll do whatever you want, but I'm going ot be upset if slart stops posting qwutes.  It was one of the few things that got posted on here...let alone one of the few intersting things.

On a side note did you ever figure out why the caos officers mailing list isn't working?

Yeah, just found out that OIT is blocking all outbound connections on port 25.  They had tried telling us about this before via automated email responses, but their email responses just made it seem like they had broken MX records.  The mail server has been updated to forward mails to the correct SMTP server, and hopefully we'll know soon if everyone is getting their mails again.

For the CAOS officers, I sent out a mail with the subject, "Getting Emails Now?"  Did all of you get it?
