Some of the HP dv6000 series laptops have a mobo recall.
I just happen to be lucky enough to have on of these laptops :bored:
Well i called up HP and they are going to take care of it for me
They told me that when i get it back it will be set back to original factory settings.
So i figure this will be the perfect time to upgrade the Hard drive.

Now on to my question, the computer is running Vista and HP did not send me any recovery or re installation
discs when i bought it.
So if i swap out the hard drive is there a way for me to install vista on the new hard drive without buying discs?
I know we get a free one but i have a license for home premium and i would like to keep it.
Also what size of hard drive do you guys recommend for doing a triple boot of xp, vista, and ubuntu?

thanks for the help.

Just make an image of the hard drive you get back, then put the image onto the hard drive you buy.

on newegg, just from a quick glance at front HD page, 5400RPM HDs are running:
$90 400Gb
$75 320Gb
$55 80 GB

I would go at least 320. Depends on if you are going to have a lot of media.

i've bought laptop hard drives there for use in a media player
they're refurbished and dirt cheap, i've had mine since November and
use it quiet a bit.  no errors or click of death, etc. so it seems to be holding up.

as for the no recovery cd, i'm sure if you called them and talked to them they'd send you one.
a simple.. "this is your fault not mine, fix the f-ing problem or i'll never buy from you again"
and other non violent threats.  (ie, postin on a college forum about the terrible service they gave you,
which in turn would cost them business)

It won't cost them anything.  None of the major PC mfgs. ship recovery discs with their products anymore.  You have to ask (and pay) for them.  Unless, however, you get a Mac, in which case you get a recovery set in a beautifully wrapped set.

Also, if you want something done, don't yell at the lower level tech people.  Instead, call corporate.  If that doesn't work, contact the BBB, and if that doesn't work... well, there are other legal means.

Thanks for the advice guys.
I called hp yesterday and they are shipping me out some discs, but i had to pay shipping.
Also I found out that certain versions of vista come with  hard drive imaging software but unfortunately home is the only
version that it is not included in  :bored:

Thanks Again

Thanks. I actually just got done watching SGA seasons 1-4. Bought them all over break for like 80 bucks :-).
Now i just have to wait for seaon 5 so i can see how the series ends.

I haven't seen any of Atlantis yet ...I'm currently on season 6 of sg-1. Borrowed all 10 seasons (and the 1st 2 of atlantis) from a friend :)

Travis W

Cool. I have the first two seasons of SG-1. I hope to get the other 8, just have to wait for them to go on sale again

Topic sufficiently derailed? >_>

But yeah, Atlantis is awesome. =D I personally liked it more than SG-1.  It's a real shame it got cancelled, but nevertheless, it is certainly worth watching, Delia.

You get recovery disks with any dell xps system.  :D

What i have seen of SG-1 i really liked. Either of you going to watch the Stargate Universe series when it comes out?

delia feerer

If atlantis is better than sg-1 then it must be amazing! I imagine I'll watch universe too.

You should look into SSD hard drives if you have some extra money, they are very fast and laptops can always use the extra juice.

Rather than starting a new thread, i figured this would be an appropriate thread to ask this question.  I have a 17 inch powerbook g4 and it fell on the ground ( :-?) very hard, so my screen busted.  I have been looking around for a 17 inch screen (craigslist) and planned on doing it myself.  However, i was wondering if anyone else had any advice on what to do?
