I have a few questions regarding the campus network in the Cougar Village apartments:

1.  Suppose I buy a new PC with a 10/100 ethernet card in it and an ethernet cable. I want to hook it up to the data jacks in my Cougar Village apartment.

    (a) How do I go about configuring my computer?  (network info, DHCP, Auto IP, DNS, etc.)

    (b) Will I be able to connect to SOENT and use my computer like the computers in EB2026?  (software and all: Visual Studio???)

2.  I recently bought a network adaptor for my PlayStation2.

    (a) Will my PlayStation2 Network Adaptor allow me to play LAN games across the campus network? With my roommate in the other room? With another student in a different building?

    (b) Can anyone tell me the setup settings for the PS2 Network Adaptor? (I tried auto and it didn't work.)

Thanx in advance for your help.

I dont think you will be able to login to the SOENT domain directly.  This type of login would require you to have your computer "joined" into the domain, which requires a certain type of domain account privilage.  You will however be able to access your SOENT home directory.  This can even be done via a broadband connection.  Just navigate to \\enghome\users\ and when you are prompted for a login password, use the following format: SOENT\ and then your password as usual.

To my knowledge, this is the only way to utilize the SOENT domain without having your computer joined into the domain.

As far as software goes... Take advantage of the MSAA.  There is a news post on the front page informing students that a computer in EB1036 is available to download and burn copies of the software.

this website describes a way of getting a MAC address so that the university can assign an IP address to the PS2

will SIUE be able to do this or do the data jacks already have an IP assigned?

Chris Swingler

AFAIK, the IP addresses (in the dorms, at least) are assigned by MAC address automatically.  So, no matter where I was to plug my computer in, I would be automatically assigned the same IP address.  I know several people in the dorms who use XBox Live with no problems at all, and I doubt that the PS2 would be any different.

And why doesn't our HELPDESK page look as nice as UWWs?

Network interface cards (NICs) come with MACs built into them.

DHCP will auto-assign an IP for you.
