Hello, everyone.

Except for the time of day, I think the polls decided that Friday would definitely be the best day to have an install party for linux.  I know in the past it has been called an installfest, but I think "install party" sounds more appealing in general.  I think it sounds more laid back and less formal.

So, here's the deal... we'll be showcasing Debian, FreeBSD (yes, it's not linux), and SuSE.  For all this, Jarod and I are already talking about the structure of the information packets; so, I think no one else needs to worry about those.

What we need to do is get some advertising done.  I have ideas on flyers, and I'll post one pretty soon for everyone to approve.  How about chalking and spreading the word on campus?  I think there are stipulations on chalking, and I know there are stipulations on flyers around campus.

Bryan, do you think you could get chalkings and flyers approved?  I know you'll actually need the flyers when approving them, but I didn't know if you could check that out if you don't mind?  I'd probably do it, but I'm not an officer.

Hello!  I've made a preliminary flyer for the upcoming install party here.

What does everyone think about this flyer?  I like the Debian banner at the top, and I think beastie balances the title.

I've tried to be informative, but is it too much?  I don't really know how to cut down on it if it is.

Again, it's just preliminary.  I saved in the wrong GIMP format and have trouble editting the file; so, I'll redo it when the time to pass out the flyer comes.  Therefore, you will notice that the background accidentally got erased in a few spots.  Also, I have a spelling error.

I'll redo this in OpenOffice later.

it won't be a problem just finalize what you want to have and I'll take care of it.  I would highly suggest not doing it THIS COMING friday because it's right before thanksgiving and the place is gonna be a ghost town on a moonless summers night (bonus points to who names the song, think hick).  Right now I'm still battling Kimmel for our forms so we'll have to see if I can get anything approved.

Not a country fan at all... but I used my vast and wonderful knowledge of the world around me, the Internet, and have found the lyric to be of Garth Brooks.  So what's the bonus points for??  Or were they just there to make me respond....

As for the Linux install party, can people just drop in and learn about Linux, not convert quite yet??

I would also be inerested in attending, but unless you can figure out a way to get some form of LINUX onto a 286 whose only file I/O device is 3.5" floppy drive (I could stick a NIC in it if that would help), I don't have a system that I'm interested in changing the OS on.

Linux never existed for the 286; it's a 386+ kernel.

However, for those that don't want to commit to Linux, we will probably have a couple Gnoppix CDs.  It's a Live CD you can put into one of your computers and have it boot up into a GUI, where you can play with the tools it has for you.

Short Answer:
Yes, you can come and just learn about Linux.

Long Answer:
My motivation for helping with this isn't to get people to switch to linux in-as-much that I want to teach people what it can be used to do. I'll admit, I still use windows on my most powerful desktop machine. When it comes to gaming, the industry has shown there is nothing better. And when it comes to multimedia, it can work in linux, but it already works in windows.
That aside, Linux gives you the tools to do any one thing better than you can do it in windows. If you want to have a streamlined OS that does one thing extremely fast - grab the linux kernel source and rebuild it to do your task. If you want AIM to report more information up front that just away time, grab GAIM or some other open source client and make it do exactly what you want, where you want, when you want.
Would I recommend Linux to History major? Heck no. But anyone who plans on making a living off of the Computer industry had better know at least the basics of the OS. That is, of course, unless ya want to spend the rest of your life working at the Dell Customer Support Center helping people plug in their mouse.

the bonus points weren't for anything other than my own amusement, besides Elizabeth Weber beat you to it.

So, do we still have a Installfest on the books for Friday (Sept. 3)? Haven't seen the fliers yet, but I'm still planning on doing it. being pushed further back in this semester if it isn't.

Hey there.

I would like to do it this Friday, but I didn't get a chance to finish the fliers (break happened and all).  You think next Friday would be good?  We could always do it second week of next semester if we want.

I think people will be busy studying next week.  What do you think?

Friday before finals is a bad idea. Lets make it early next semester
