Any programers out there?

I'm going to need a programer shortly to take care of one or two things for a project I'm working on.  Enviroment is FreeBSD and will need to be in a GUI.  I really don't care what language you use; just so long as it works.

Okay, no responses.  I don't know if there is no one here who is suitable or if I'm doing something wrong.  I'll fill in a few more details real quick.  I still prefer not to get into it too much on here.

Basic front end that runs various commands in the background; depending on how you want to do it possibly some tcp/ip communication with a server on a local network.  Some kind of knowledge of reading input off of a serial port would be helpful.  Pay will be a couple of hundred dollars depending on how good you are.  I prefer to show someone what I'm working with and the objectives rather than tell them how to do it which is part of the reason I'm being vague.

I'll give it a couple of days before I expand my search.  I'd rather have someone local take care of it I can work with but time is time.  If someone even knows of someone around here that might fit the bill hook me up.  And for students we're talking about something to put on your resume and references.

Vague details won't make anyone jump to your aid.  You need to be detailed and clear about what you will be expecting of your possible hires.  You want our help, not the other way around.  Therefore, you have to sell your proposal to us.

If there are things that require secrecy, leave those details out.  Just let the possible hires know there is more to be said once confidentiality has been officially established.  Preferably, you should make this official before hiring someone so that they can get details before deciding to sign a contract.

Also, I understand you don't want to tell someone how to do their job.  That is good, but you need to be clear on exactly what your requirements will be, or you will end up with a poor product.

Hope that helps your search.

Following up on Mike's post:

There should be enough detail so that a programmer can estimate how many hours will need to be deticated to get the job done properly and what are the deadlines.

Here goes- again, freebsd, gui, local network.

- On the client; clean looking simple interface that will allow the computer to only accept text that needs to be modified and sent to a server.  Text will not be hard when I say modify, I could write up a perl script to handle that in a few minutes.

- Server will do it's thing and send back a confirm or deny statement.

- Assuming server okay's client needs to be unlocked so to speak.  Allow user to run two commands (as in unix commands that could be run from the shell).  At this point a time needs to be logged.

- User is done; logs out, data sent to server, wash rinse repeat.

Looking good is important, functionality is of course the most important thing.

Timeframe: I would need something in about a month after start, starting hopefully within two weeks.

If anyone is interested, just email me or get me on aim and we can meet up to clarify anything and hash out details.  I can hook up a testbed with a client and server to work with (actually I would insist on it to make sure everyone is on the same page).  Again, if you're interested just get ahold of me.

EDIT:  To be clear the server will need very little to be done to it.  Unless you need to set something up on the server to send/recive the data from/to the client or something along those lines you won't need to do anything.

It sounds like the only hard part will be the encryption/authentication needed to confirm the client’s identity before the server will allow it to run commands.

Correction...

The hardest part will be escaping liability when it gets hacked. ;-)

Sigh...

This is why I don't like to talk about specifics online.  Everyone is a critic regardless of if they're talking out their ass or not.  I could run down the security setup but that would just lead to a big dick waving contest consisting of "YEAH BUT NINJAS ARMED WITH FIBER OPTIC SPLICING EQUIPMENT AND A CAR BATTERY COULD HACKS IT IN SEVEN SECONDS" with a rebuttal of "NO THE NINJAS WILL BE SHOT BY MY HEAT SEEKING AUTOMATIC MACHINE GUNS THAT FIRE HOT BUTTER"

If anyone thinks they can do the job but has questions just get hold of me.

i think first the ninjas would disguise themselves as popcorn.  then the butter from the machine guns would make them irresistably delicious.  at this point an unsuspecting network admin would eat the ninjas. the ninjas would stay in his stomach like a trojan horse.  then, they would bust out of his stomach like "alien" and totall fuck some shit up.  pwned by the p()pC0R|\|1nj45!!1

We were just trying to help you pose your job proposal correctly.  I was trying to do it in a non-smartass way.  However, due to your aggresive attitude, I can and will push back :)

Take a look at this; it will help you immensely.  You should REALLY read this before continuing at a dangerous pace!  I think you should scroll down to "Use meaningful, specific subject headers" and "Be precise and informative about your problem", which pretty much applies to all the messages you have posted to this topic.

I mean, I can't imagine one person saying, "A VAGUE JOB?!  HELL YEAH, LET'S DO IT!"

Basically, no one cares enough to do a job for you if you can't even describe the job correctly in the first place.  I'd never work for anyone like that; I'd tell them, "Good luck finding some sucker to do that!"

I agree. Nothing wrong with trying to help someone, but lets not start spitting in each others faces.

I didn't have a problem with your suggestions.  In the future if you wish to push back go ahead and do so; I don't need a warning of impending doom.  My "aggresive attitude" was in response to someone stating something that was baseless and may steer someone who would otherwise be interested away.

Thanks for the e-advice.  Although, I'm not asking for help; I'm offering money for labor.

I never intended this thread to be a full description of what program I need written.  I understand the need for enough of a synopsis to estimate time/difficulty and have no problem with that.  I am just trying to find someone who can do the work.  I will explain exactly what needs to be done to anyone that shows interest, they can take it or leave it.

Well this has been an interesting time.  I really had hoped to find someone local who might need some cash or want to build up a resume.  The offer is still there, although I'm sure that I've upset the caos hive collective so I'm not getting my hopes up.

My apologizes that this has gotten entirely too ugly for what I was aiming to do.
