I would like to have Visual Studio 2005 installed on my home computer so that I can do my C++ homework there.

Please help me.

Well, you have come to the right place.  CAOS is a great place to ask questions about computer stuff at SIUE.  Not only do many knowledgeable SIUE students read this site, but often CS Faculty and Staff look at it too.

For starters, I would like to encourage you to use the Computer Science Labs on campus. These labs have been pre-configured by professionals and are likely to have fewer distractions than your home computers.  Many of these computers are also faster than the typical home computer.  The Computer Science Tutor Lab (map to EB1036) is open between 8am and the end of the last tutor session of the day.  It is a great lab for beginning CS students to use.

Next, I have written a document to get people started with this process.  The last page of this document includes CD-burning instructions for the CD-Burning software that we use on our computers.  However, your software may be different.

Click here for "Instructions for using the MSDNAA to obtain development software."

Does anyone else find it funny that Andrew's rank is "I have no life so I respond to my own posts", and he responded to his own post?!

Tutor Lab (EB1036):
3Ghz HyperThreaded Intel Pentium 4
512MB DDR Ram
Mid-range NVIDIA AGP 3D Video Card
SATA 1 Hard-drives with 8MB Cache
100Mb/s Ethernet

Special Projects Lab (EB2029):
3.2Ghz HyperThreaded Intel Pentium 4
1GB DDR2 Ram
Mid-range NVIDIA  PCIe 3D Video Card
SATA 1 Hard-drives with 8MB Cache
100Mb/s Ethernet
and
2.6Ghz Intel Pentium 4
512MB DDR Ram
High-end NVIDIA  AGP 3D Video Card
EIDE Hard-drives
100Mb/s Ethernet

Mobile Robitics Lab (EB1022):
HCI Lab (EB3048):
1.9Ghz Intel Pentium 4
512MB RDRAM
SCSI Hard-drives
100Mb/s Ethernet

There is nothing that we can do about the internet as we must use OIT.  However, I believe that your complaint might be directed at the residences and not the Engineering building.  I seem to remember that the Dorms and Apartments had some kind of bandwidth capping in place when I was there.  This capping does not seem to adversely affect the Engineering Building.  I routinely get 300-400KB/s download speeds from the labs.  This is plenty fast for all but the largest of downloads.

Yes,  There is still a bandwith cap out in CV and the dorms.  But 9 times out of 10 the lack of speed is due to HUGE amounts of traffic.  I do believe they are making attempts at dragging glass out that way, but I'm not sure on the progress of that project.

The internet was down in Prairie last week on Monday.  It came back up and was working like it normally did last semester.  Three days later it went down again in the morning.  When it came back up, it resumed its super lagginess and what not.

I do konw that a gentleman from the Alestle stopped by the office today and left a message with the head of TELECOM to hopefully set up an interview.  I believe he watns to do a story on the network and hopefully shed some light on the situation so keep your eyes open.
