it's right across the street from where I work, but I don't think I will.  Maybe if I feel mean and want to screw with the HR rep people.

Back when Windows 2000 was launching, I attended a bunch of these get togethers.  They are great for getting yourself known in the industry locally, and occasionally there are some great speakers from Microsoft in addition to the basic software presentations.  Additionally, you can hear about quite a few internships through attending, but you can't be just a wallflower...

I'll agree with that.  The best thing you can do as a future whatever is get yourself known by the right people in industry.  Go to local user group meetings, speak to the people that are out there doing that.   The more people recognize and remember you, the better off you are.  I got my current job by doing just that.  I started attending a local acm chapter meeting while I was a junior in college.  My last semester in school I got an internship with one of the companies that is prominent in the industry.  I got along great with everyone and now I love my job, and all is grand.

Another great peice of overlooked advice is GET ALONG WITH PROFESSORS!  Find a mentor.  Someone that can put in a good word for you here and there, write letters of recomendatio, knock you upside the head when you deserve, and make fun of you when you need a laugh.  Dr. Weinberg has been a great help to me and I'm positive without him I'd probably still be struggling to find a job.
