The Sporting News, a premiere national sports magazine and web site based in St. Louis, is looking for a lead programmer with Java, Perl, SQL, HTML and JavaScript experience to work in a fast-paced sports Internet environment. This position requires a self-starting individual to participate directly in development and also lead the development of applications and scripts to interact with our database/web publishing system running in Informix on Linux, develop web based applications and scripts, and research new technology for future initiatives. In addition, a key roll will be to work with the Executive Producer to manage and schedule the programming phase of implementation and oversee 2-3 programmers in a team environment. Strong communication skills, both written and oral, are a must for this position along with the ability to multi-task. Knowledge and interest in sports and related statistics are beneficial, but not required.

Job Description/Skills:

1. Act as programmer:
-- Implement necessary programming using Java, Perl, SQL, HTML and JavaScript for programming projects,
-- Administrate, maintain and implement upgrades to online publishing system and back-end scripts,
-- Present a willingness to be on-call during critical work peaks,
-- Show good judgment in assessing emergency situations and act accordingly.

2. Technical research and structure:
-- Work with staff to research new technologies and processes and formulate recommendations for the use of new technologies where applicable,
-- Work with staff to practice unified code style and ensure proper documentation in order to maintain a stable environment,
-- Check work and take responsibility for code delivery.

3. Manage:
-- Lead 2-3 programmers using a team approach through excellent communication,
-- Encourage and foster a learning environment to grow new skills and meet new challenges,
-- Show good judgment in properly aligning priorities, and oversee daily routines,
-- Take ownership and be proactive in getting what's needed to complete projects,
-- Handle sensitive personnel issues discretely and with respect.

4. Act as liaison to management:
-- Assist in overall departmental planning strategy,
-- Coordinate schedules for best coverage,
-- Assign man-hours and set/meet deadlines,
--Work closely with peers and management to communicate issues and solve problems.
