I just wanted to thank everybody for their input.  I have decided to actually acquire a Linux OS.  I broke down and bought a whopping $20 book that came with twelve different Linux distros.  So far I've only used the two CD bootables.  Call me a sissy, but I'm just not toooo convinced that I need to throw away Microsoft yet.     However, of the two that I have used (Knoppix and Damn Small), I've absolutely loved them.  I see no reason why somebody would want to pay $200 for an operating system that requires 10 times the amount of space as something that can be booted from a disk...THAT'S FOR FREE!!  But anyway, I'll try to keep you guys posted on how my new found love affair turns out.  And again, thanks for all your input and all your opinions.

Sorry Dad!  I forgot about all the youngin's on this site.   :censored:   I won't let it happen again.  Next time I'll just call the OS... Levee Small Linux... or Embankment Small Linux... or Barrier Small Linux... or Dike Small Linux.  Oops, I probably shouldn't say that either.

Knoppix is one of the best bootable Linux sessions I have ever used.  Ubuntu is okay but Knoppix tends to be nicer with hardware devices.  Especially Hard Drives.  I have used Knoppix way too many times to recover data from what windows claimed was a dead drive.

Is there a particular flavor of linux that is better for laptop computers? (More specifically a Compaq Presario r3030us) For some reason, I have always thought that Linux is more difficult to install on a laptop.

The only difficulty I had was because some devices don't have drivers written.  But in most cases if your device is somewhat popular or name brand you should be fine.
