It's not too long. The page is so long cause there are around 200 comments on the page.

Read it.

Ok, so I posted this the other day, and didnt get much of a response. I just found this on the same guys blog, and it's pretty great too.

Lemme know what YOU think.

I read them both.  I think he makes some good points about people that code as just a job.  However, I think this guy is a little self-important.  Mostly he sounds like an elitist ass.  Computers went mainstream and so did programming them.  You can’t tell me that every doctor, lawyer, engineer, etc. does it because of their passion towards the craft.  So he had to work with people that didn’t know or care as much as him, welcome to the real world.

His issues could be carried over to almost any job.  He’s the manager at the fast food place, he loves it because he is the king and can’t stand the 16-year-old punk that really doesn’t give a damn as long as he gets a check.

I don't think he's talking about the people who just program because they need a script here or there, like the doctors, lawyers and engineers you speak of. I think he is talking about people that are employeed as programmers. I see this a lot in people pursuing a degree in Computer Science, and it really drives me up the wall.

i didnt read the first article but the second one was really good.

i think we [cs-ers] can relate to what he is saying. i definitely think the world underappreciates computer scientists.  why? because they dont understand how computers work ergo, how computer scientists work.

iamjwc, I think thatguy was saying that there are people in every profession that don't care about their craft - doctors, lawyers, engineers, programmers, waiters. Maybe such programmers shouldn't be employed by Microsoft, because Microsoft can choose who to employ... I don't know.
The funny thing is, I was thinking exactly along the same lines as what thatguy wrote, just didn't want to say anything. Even anology with a fast food place came to my mind too. I agree, programming went mainstream, and not every company needs their programmers to create DaVinci masterpieces. The question that comes to my mind is - do all those people really need a computer science degree? Once again, I don't know.

But anyways, the reason I'm writing this, is because I can't believe we have people with CS major here who do not care about computer science.  :-) iamjwc, are you sure? Let's make them! Hey you all out there, care or else - deal with us!  :boxing:  iamjwc, what should we do with them? Any suggestions?

jrat, I had to look 'ergo' up. Which one of you is which Justin anyways? Can you describe youselves?

I don't know that we should DO anything with them. Trying to get as many people in CS genuinely interested is my suggestion. The officers of CAOS are really working hard to try to make this happen. As soon as we get rolling, we hope to have as many events as possible this year, on a wide variety of topics.

And yes, I am the tall hippie.

What IamJWC looks like on the weekend.

And Yes CAOS new goal is to show people that CS isn't all about programming. I will be giving a talk this semester about Usability and how it fits in with CS. SO there one other area of CS that is growing that doesn't really depend stricly on your programming skills.

I just need to point out that Justin and Justin are not hippies.  They are pseudo-emo hipsters, they lack the angst to be truely emo.  Hippies are a different sub-culture entirely.

Just an FYI.

I don't know what "hipster" means, but I met both Justins, and they don't look like hippies. Also, they are both much more attractive than the hippies in the pics above, especially the naked one on wikipedia.  :-)
