Have a nice evening & weekend,

Gateway CHI May 15, 2006 Meeting

Feature Discussion:

UCD, Software Development, and the company Org Chart... Where's Our Place at the Table?

User-Centered Design is practiced at different times and places for various organizations and projects. How do UCD practitioners in the 'real world' determine where we can be most effective? Where do we position ourselves in the company organization chart? How do we decide where to emphasize UCD within a software development process or methodology?

Joe Grant will facilitate a discussion on this topic. If you have an opportunity, please send your ideas or lessons learned to Joe before the GatewayCHI meeting at joegrant413@yahoo.com .

Discussion Facilitator:
Joe has been involved with UCD since 1993, and has worked as an employee, consultant, and instructor at a number of different companies, including Edward Jones, Tripos, and SIUE. Joe also has worked on software development methodology at State Farm. He currently works at Perficient as a Lead Business Consultant.

Group Activity: â€Ã...“Our Own Odditiesâ€Ã,

HOW TO PLAY: What you can do is to keep your eyes wide open and a camera handy, take pictures of those awkward designs that have violated Human Factors and Usability principles in our lives--home, work, in the stores, on the road--you name it. Bring those pictures to our next meeting, give a short expert critique, and let us figure out what we can do to improve the design over a lot of laughs. You can also submit pictures via email to Elizabeth at elizabethmarie@gmail.com (no picture file larger than 1MB, please) before the meeting (no later than May 12 noon), so your submission of bad designs can be compiled with others’ into a PowerPoint presentation.

Date:  Monday, May 15, 2006
Time:   6:45 - 8:45pm (networking at 6:15pm)
Location:   Perficient, 622 Emerson Ste. 400

some remember, some don't.  Joe Grant was an adjunct faculty member in the CS department for a while teaching the CS321 HCI course.  He's currently a coworker of mine at Perficient. I encourage anyone interested to make the trek, it's a ton of fun.
