Looking for a good P2P agent

I've got a fairly new format and OS install on a new hard drive.  I haven't installed a file sharing agent yet, and would really like to keep my system free of the pollution of spyware and such that is included in some of the more popular tools.

Does anyone have suggestions on an easy to use program with a large file selection and no hidden spyware?

That's a long shot.  Most P2P apps are riddled with the stuff.  IRC is a good place to start, most IRC clients (mIRC for example) are pretty spyware free, though a little difficult to learn to use.  Threre is a hacked version of Kazaa called Kazaa Lite, you might want to look for that (though it is illegal).  eMule is safe, and I believe that eDonkey and Overnet are also cool.

Just remember, that by law, the programs are required to notify you during install.  So, don't get happy clicking that "Next >" button, and read your liscense agreement carefully!  Anything that hints that spyware may be installed, and your mouse should zip straight to that Cancel button.

I use eMule, which is an open source eDonkey Network client. It is completely spyware free, and is for more superier to the Original eDonkey Client that has spyware. You can always download the source and modify it if you want.

here is the URL: emule.sourceforge.net.

here is a link to get an updated server.met file: servermet.com.
It is updated every 6 or so minutes. Read the page for the link, copy and paste the link in the textbox on the servers tab, and click update. As long as you keep eMule open, that link will stay there, so you can click it when ever you want

If you are concered with spyware, there is a program called "Ad-Aware". It scans your registry and hard drive(s) for spyware and banner ads. If it finds any, it will display a list with checkboxes so you can choose which files to delete.

Get it at: lavasoftusa.com.

There is a full featured free version and a Professional version. The Pro version has options to edit the regitry entries. The free version just allows you to delete regitry entries.

I ran ad-aware on my old system, and it did find a whole bunch of stuff hiding in the round corners of my hard disk.  I took it's word that it was all bad (I didn't really feel like hand picking through several hundred files) and it got rid of it.  Many programs ceased to run after that, but I guess it was cleaner.  I'd really like to prevent spyware rather than try to clean it up later.

I was looking at the faq for eMule, and it seems like it is geared towards users that are always running and sharing files.  I know that this is what makes p2p apps work, however, my computer is only running for about 8 hours a day, and I'm only looking to download less than 5 files a week (I've already got more junk than I can handle, and I'm a little bit pickier these days).  If I want to download a file, I don't want to be stuck in the back end of a queue because I have a low rating.  Downloading isn't a big part of my life anymore, I just want to be able to get a file or two here and there.

Then try Gnuleus. It is an open source client made for MS Windows, and even works in Wine on Linux. It's powerful, but not too good looking. The important part is that it is full-featured. Oh yeah, it can get different parts of a file from different ppl to make the DL go faster.

Ryan, what i use is kazaa without all the spyware. Somebody from the UK modified the code for kazza and took out all of the spyware that comes with it. Its called Kazaa lite. The format is exactly the sama as kazaa. I havent had any trouble not finding the things that i want. Enjoy!

Well, for now I'm trying KL, mainly because I have used Kazaa before and am used to the interface.  I also think that file selection will be greater there than some of the lesser used options.  I am still open to better suggestions and will try them if and when I have more free time.

Did I just say "free time?"  Where did all of that stuff go?  If anyone comes across something called "Ryan's free time," let me know where its at.  I really do miss it.

I spotted your "Free Time" on higway 250 going 100 MPH while being chased by cops. The cops, in their infinate wisdom, use a spike stike to puncture the tires. Well, that worked, but it sent the car flying out of control into the oncoming traffic taking out three cars killing 8 people. Now, your "Free Time" is behind bars for 5 consecutive life terms. If you want it back, you need to go down to the police station with shovel, pick axes, and other impliments of destruction to bust it out, but then you will always be a fugitive to, well, I think you can figure out what the sybolism is here for what you will be a fugitive of. If you can't figure out the symbolism, I could tell you.

Does that mean they'd put me in group W?

And Ryan walked over to the bench there, and there's group W, which is where they put you if you may not be *moral* enough to join CAOS after committing your special crime, and there was all kinds of mean nasty ugly-looking people on the bench there.
News forgers.  Porno FTP site admins.  Anon-server users!  Promiscuous NNTP site admins.  News administrators running promiscuous NNTP sites, with full feeds no less!  Sitting right there on the bench next to Ryan! And there was other mean and nasty and ugly and horrible crime-type guys sitting on the bench next to Ryan.  And the meanest, nastiest, ugliest one of the bunch, he had probably offended more people through his postings than the world's top ten sickest, most twisted f*cks combined, he was coming over to Ryan and he was coming over to Ryan and he was mean 'n' nasty 'n' ugly 'n' horrible and all kinds of things and he sat down next to Ryan and said "Kid, what'd ya get?"
Ryan said "I didn't get nothing, I'm just a fugitive of the law".  He said "Why are you running?", and Ryan said "Bustin' my free time out of jail".  And they all moved away from him on the bench there, and a hairy eyeball and all kinds of mean nasty things, 'till he said "for hacking the Police Stations mainframe to erase any data on my free time".  They all came back, shook his hand, talkin' 'bout crime, underground FTP sites, promiscuous NNTP servers, what to do about Barney the Dinosaur, all kinds of groovy things that they was talking about on the bench.  And everything was fine, they was trading wares and all kinds of things, until the President of CAOS came over, had some paper in her hand, and said...
