Please take time to attend the next faculty candidate presentation and meet with the candidate afteward. You maybe taking courses from anyone of our candidates so this is your oppotunity to voice your opinion.

More Sex Generates Better Offspring: Genetic Algorithms and Their Application in Optimization and Data Mining

Abstract

A genetic algorithm (GA) is an algorithmic technique that mimics biological evolution in order to solve or optimize the solution of a problem. Given a specific problem to solve, the inputs to the GA are a set of solutions to the problem, and a metric called a fitness function that allows solutions to be quantitatively evaluated (or ranked) as according to their fitness.  These initial candidates may be solutions already known to work, that we wish to optimize with the GA, but more often they are generated at random!
The GA evaluates candidates according to the fitness function. Within any pool of randomly generated candidates, most will not work at all, and these will be discarded. However, purely by chance, a few may hold promise - they may show activity, even if only weak and imperfect activity, toward solving the problem. These candidates are kept and used to breed better generations of solutions.

In this presentation, a basic description of genetic algorithms and how they work will be presented, and some applications to molecular drug design and discovery presented and briefly discussed. No prior domain knowledge is presumed.

Those who took a class with Dr. Abrahamian, but didn't attend the presentation, I think you should still send your feedback!!!
