Look Ma, no driver!

Autonomous Robotic Golf Cart Demonstration.

When: Friday the 9th at 11 am
Where: East Side of the Engineering Building near the Meridian Sculpture

A team of SIUE students will demonstrate their entry in the Mini-Grand Challenge Competition. The competition is to develop a small electric vehicle that can safely navigate the campus pathways completely on it own. The competition is modeled after the DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) Grand Challenge whose goal is to get vehicles to navigate off-road and urban settings completely autonomously (http://www.darpa.mil/GRANDCHALLENGE/).

The SIUE team, consisting of students from Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering, retrofitted a single person golf cart to navigate along the campus path using vision processing, gps, sonar, and sophisticated steering feedback. The team competed recently at Penn State Abington. Even though they did not place this year they did win the award for Most Creative Design. This is the first year SIUE as competed in this ambitious competition.

EVERYONE IS WELCOME!  Come see the robot and hear about the really cool engineering and science behind it.

For more information about the competition see: http://cede.psu.edu/~avanzato/robots/contests/outdoor/index.htm

Pfft!  Don't believe the hype.  I've seen the golf cart; one word:  :lame: .  Plus, I hear that it's not even autonomous--it's really just jrat crammed in underneath the seat controlling everything (he's pretty tiny... ).

And the guy that programmed the thing doesn't know what he's doing... **shakes head**

...  :-P

If we don't catch a break with the weather we will try something in the atrium of the Engineering Building.
