Note: If a team of students commits to competing in Mechmania, the CS Department can help support their registration and travel to the conference.  I will only consider a well prepared team - should have taken at least CS 340. If you have taken AI or the Game Technology Class that would be better.

Hello from the ACM at the University of Illinois!

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign ACM student chapter is
pleased to announce the 14th Annual Reflections | Projections Student
Computing Conference, to be held on the weekend of October 3-5, 2008.
This year we are excited to announce many speakers from both academia
and industry, including:

   Larry Wall
Creator of Perl, the programming language.
   Keith Adams
Software Engineer at VMware working on their virtual
       machine monitor.
   David Roundy
Physicist and author of the darcs version control system.
   Crispin Cowan
Linux security expert, and founder of Immunix, part of the
       Windows Security Team.
   Scott Draves
Leader of the distributed computing project, Electric Sheep
       and inventor of Fractal Flames.

In addition, we will be hosting two participation-oriented events during
the conference.

The annual R|P Job Fair, focused entirely on jobs in computing,
       on Friday, Oct. 3.

The annual Mechmania C++/AI programming competition
beginning the night Friday, Oct. 3.

Access to all our speaking events is free and open to the public.
Once again, our t-shirts are free, but if you would like to guarantee
one in your size, please go through our free registration option.

Eligibility for Mechmania does require paid registration. Additionally,
if you're coming out of town, you may be interested in our food service
for the weekend provided with a paid registration.

Our registration page is located at

We hope to see you on Oct. 3!

GO TO THIS!

Of the group that goes, at least one of you is bound to end up in New York City. Mike got a job at Morgan Stanley 2 years ago. I got a job at LimeWire last year. Who will it be this year?

The year before me, Jonathan Birch got a placement with the other MS (Microsoft).

Morgan Stanley will be there again this year.  They've turned out to be a really good company; I recommend checking them out.

Also, don't pass up on doing Mechmania at least once.  Those of you good at AI and/or algorithms should definitely give it a go.

I also wouldn't pass up seeing this conference; it look like it has some strong presentations this year.  If I don't get to go this year, I'll definitely be going next year.

Yeah, this conference is definitely worth going to!

I mean, their lack of interest in me is what drove me to go to graduate school!

Haha... ha... ha...

... why am I not laughing?

... *long pause*...

For God's sake, don't go!

(J/K!  I look forward to this every year... definitely check it out!  )
