I have to admit that there are a lot of new guitarist out there that I do not know about.  Most of the people I would consider the best are older guys like Hendrix, Joe Satriani, Clapton, Eddie Van Halen, etc... but I just saw this guy Buckethead and thought he was pretty good.

Anyways, I know there a few of you that are into music and just wanted to see who everyone else thinks is the best guitarist ever.  I still think it is Hendrix because he did amazing things with much less that most today, but Buckethead is up there for sure.

This is kind of a strange topic for a CS message board, but I have someone I think will help tie these two things together a bit more. This guy is definitely not 'the best', but is definitely good. The reason I am showing him is because A) I couldn't find a video of Les Paul doing this song, and  B) this guy is a web developer in Chicago (the tie). Here goes... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YTZpCD5QRsk

Now, as far as my opinion on the best guitarists.
David Grier: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IgfKZRujgbs
Joscho Stephan: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9_jzSv7G6vQ
Wes Montgomery: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MOm17yw__6U

I don't have much respect for players like Satriani, Vai, Van Halen, or Buckethead. They may be fast, but they lose any melody their songs might have had. Many of the players I listed can all play fast, but do so while keeping the song intact.

Also, I guess it would be unfair to not include Django. This guy only had 2 fingers, too.

Well, I put this post in the lounge because it is not CS related really.  However, it is never good for any profession to be totally focused on the "normal" business of that profession.  There is a lot CS people can learn from and contribute to music.  Understanding music and all the details about it (that I do not) can help in many fields of CS.

Absolutely. Hopefully JR and I will be able to contribute before too long. Stay tuned. ;-)

Oh, Tony. You're Italian... You should know the phrase "If I told you, I'd have to kill you." Believe me, CAOS will be among the first to know when the cat is out of the bag.

Buckethead recorded with Guns N' Roses on their new cd Chinese Democracy.  Hendrix is still the best.
