It seems to be silent at the moment, but I'll make sure I check back later.  I like the idea, I just hope it does catch on and we can get some good music playing all day.

On a side note- it took me about long enough to get Real configured "properly".  After the careful install I still had to go through and edit the preferences to stop giving them permission to spy on me.  :)  Also, information@riaa.org is a good email address to use when signing up for stuff like this.  Oh, and I'm sure the nice people at riaa.org WOULD like the complimentary newsletter, etc.   :-D

Right now from Tuesdays at 6 - 7 PM, Jesse Phelps and I are doing a show called, "Uhhh, Technology?"

We really need to make our website for it or something, and we really don't know what to talk about.

I suppose it'll come together, but call us (number to come later) and make fools of us by asking hard computer questions.

Heh, heh.  Will do.  That sounds pretty cool.  Keep us posted on what happens if we're unable to catch the show.

I was helping a friend move and missed it.
Anyone listen?

Heh, sorry, first airing was this last Tuesday.

It goes on Tuesdays from 6 - 7 PM.

We think we're going to call it TechTalk; we didn't even have a name for the first show.

This past Tuesday we talked about SSH and tunneling XFree through it.  I forgot to hit the record button; so, I can't show the show again this time :-(

Oh, and if you want, you guys can call in when you're listening!  We hope to have that happen :-)

I don't remember the phone number now, but I'll give it when we're on the air.

Thanks guys! :-)

Yeah, the skinny on Web Radio is that it is up and running but is not Officially up, or fully staffed yet. The official opening has been planned for February...sometime. And also, the site should be redone by then. Because yes, it IS hidious right now. Later.

The only hidious thing I saw right away was the fact that they are using Real Audio and not something like ShoutCast.  Is there a reason why they are using Real?

Peter Motyka

I asked about this and the webradio person told me the streaming audio format was not thier decsion.  Personally, I think it was a political move.  Universities are afraid to affiliate themselves with MP3 because of the bad reputation it has from the p2p networks.  Using Real gives them the appearence of running a more legit station using a commercial technology.  I dunno, that is my guess.

It was not political. SIUE has a license for real server and it was set up and running. Why re-invent the wheel. Use what you have.  We are looking at expanding the options of formats available but there is no guarantee or any plans in place.

Well, we contacted our graduate assistant who then contacted our advisor; he said there is a chance we'll be getting shoutcast.

Yeah, the reason for using Real I think is because we already had it, like KCole said.

I contacted Lisa Herman a couple days back about ShoutCast.  I even offered to rebroadcast over shoutCast, she responded back and was hesient about my offer due to Copyright reasons with the record labels.  I am personally not a big fan of Real.  Last time I checked Real Server wasn't exactly free.  I see ShoutCast as a way to avoid work later if SIUE drops Real in the future.  What does SIUE use Real for besides Web Radio?
